About Rune Reading

Rune Reading is a browser-only entertainment and self-reflection activity built around three randomly selected entries from the Elder Futhark. The page deliberately separates two kinds of information. Rune characters, Unicode code points, common reconstructed names, transliterations, positions in the conventional three-group catalogue, reconstructed literal glosses, and uncertainty notes come from the same source-checked 24-entry table already used by Lizely's Rune Meanings reference tool. The draw order, the three card positions, and every reflection question are modern Lizely-authored product rules.

There is no second copy of the Elder Futhark identity table in this tool. Its logic imports the existing catalogue object directly, and tests require object identity rather than merely checking that two independently typed lists happen to match. That boundary matters because duplicate reference tables drift. A correction to a historical identity should have one maintained location, while the entertainment interaction can evolve separately without rewriting the historical data.

Choose Draw three runes to create a fresh local draw. The browser's Web Crypto random-number generator supplies 23 unsigned 32-bit words to a full Fisher-Yates shuffle of the 24 shared entries. The first three shuffled entries are assigned to Notice, Question, and Small step. Because the selection is made without replacement, one rune cannot appear twice in the same reading. If secure browser randomness is unavailable, the tool reports an error instead of silently falling back to Math.random or a server request. The draw is not stored, uploaded, tied to an account, or sent to an outside service.

Each card displays the historical identity fields and then a neutral prompt. Notice asks what detail the historical word-image brings to attention. Question asks what open question the word-image helps the visitor phrase. Small step asks what small, reversible possibility comes to mind. These prompts do not assign a permanent spiritual meaning to a rune, declare an event likely, tell the visitor what decision to make, or claim to reproduce a single ancient casting practice. The reconstructed literal gloss is used only as a metaphorical word-image for reflection. Where the catalogue says a name, sound, or gloss is disputed, that uncertainty remains visible.

The Elder Futhark is a historical writing system, not a single documented universal fortune-telling manual. Modern rune-reading systems vary in layout, symbolic associations, blank-rune use, reversal rules, and interpretive language. This tool does not add a blank rune, does not rotate cards into reversed positions, and does not claim that its three labels are ancient. It does not predict the future, discover hidden facts, read another person's mind, establish supernatural causes, or provide medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety, relationship, employment, or crisis guidance.

Eight literal anchors independently lock representative points across the shared catalogue: Fehu, Thurisaz, Wunjo, Hagalaz, Pertho, Algiz, Tiwaz, and Othala or Othalan. Tests verify the character, Unicode code point, common name, transliteration, aett, and position for each anchor. Further invariants require exactly 24 entries, three groups of eight, unique characters and code points, and positions one through eight in every group. Public references include the Unicode runic block and educational museum or university material; reconstructed forms remain labeled as reconstructions rather than direct transcriptions of one ancient source.

The result is intentionally ephemeral. Draw again creates a new independent shuffle. Closing or refreshing the page discards the displayed cards. The tool uses no paid API, runtime dictionary lookup, external script, location permission, file upload, localStorage, sessionStorage, or server processing. It remains useful offline after its page assets load.

Obtain 23 unsigned 32-bit values from Web Crypto, perform a complete Fisher-Yates shuffle, and take three unique entries. Assign them to the explicitly modern Notice, Question, and Small step positions. Display only shared historical identity fields and their uncertainty notes, followed by generic Lizely-authored reflection prompts. Do not add reversed meanings, a blank rune, predictions, decision advice, or claims of one universal ancient divination method.
