I Ching Reading
Cast six three-coin lines locally, inspect the primary and transformed King Wen hexagrams, and see every changing line without submitting a personal question.
Privacy: your files never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser.
How to use
- 1.Review the stated convention: heads equals 3, tails equals 2, and the six lines will be recorded from the bottom upward.
- 2.Choose Cast six lines to generate 18 local Web Crypto coin bits and inspect each line's faces, total, polarity, and changing status.
- 3.Compare the numbered primary hexagram with the transformed hexagram when changing lines exist, then use Reset to clear the local result.
About I Ching Reading
I Ching Reading is a private, browser-based three-coin casting tool. It creates six lines, identifies the primary hexagram, and, when old yin or old yang lines appear, identifies the transformed hexagram. The tool presents the mechanical structure of a cast without asking for a name, birth date, private question, account, or contact detail. It is designed for cultural exploration and reflection, not for factual prediction.
This implementation declares its coin convention instead of hiding it. Heads has a value of 3 and tails has a value of 2. Three coins therefore total 6, 7, 8, or 9. A 6 is old yin: a broken, changing line that becomes yang. A 7 is young yang: a solid, stable line. An 8 is young yin: a broken, stable line. A 9 is old yang: a solid, changing line that becomes yin. Each displayed row includes the three coin faces, total, polarity, stability, and position.
The first toss is Line 1 at the bottom. Later tosses build upward until Line 6 at the top. The result panel keeps its internal line array in that bottom-first order while drawing the visual figure with the top line above the bottom line. This distinction matters: reversing it changes the lower and upper trigrams and can identify a different hexagram. The evidence fixture includes a mixed-line cast that resolves to Hexagram 64 and transforms to Hexagram 18 specifically to catch that orientation error.
The lower trigram comes from Lines 1 through 3, and the upper trigram comes from Lines 4 through 6. Eight literal bottom-first trigram patterns represent Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, and Earth. A source-backed 8-by-8 King Wen matrix maps the lower and upper trigrams to exactly one of the 64 received-order hexagrams. The catalogue also stores the official Unicode English name and code point for each numbered symbol.
Hexagram lines are drawn with CSS segments so the figure remains legible even when a device font does not contain the Unicode I Ching Symbols block. Unicode symbols and standard English names appear as supporting labels. The page does not copy a modern commercial translation, publish unsourced line judgments, or generate an AI interpretation. Instead, it offers neutral prompts to compare the present structure, the marked changes, and the transformed structure in the user's own reflection.
The Cast six lines action requests 18 random 32-bit values from the browser Web Crypto API and uses one low bit from each value to choose heads or tails. If secure random generation is unavailable or throws an error, the tool reports that failure and produces no cast; it never silently falls back to Math.random. The random process does not claim supernatural accuracy, and no cast result is guaranteed to describe an event.
All state remains in the current browser tab. The widget contains no fetch call, upload, analytics call, history store, localStorage record, or question field. Reset clears the current cast and returns to the initial explanation. The generated result is inspectable client-side, as expected for an L1 browser tool; the privacy promise is local processing and no persistence, not tamper resistance or secrecy from someone controlling the device.
Keyboard users can reach the native Cast and Reset actions with standard Tab navigation, and both controls maintain a 44-pixel minimum target. After a successful cast, focus moves to the result region. Each line exposes an accessible label with its position, polarity, change state, coin faces, and total. The responsive layout stacks on narrow screens and places the primary and transformed figures side by side only when space permits.
Verification uses literal independent fixtures rather than asking production code to generate its own expected results. Tests cover all eight arrangements of three coins, the four line types, eight trigrams, all 64 official names and code points, every number in the King Wen matrix, pure Heaven and Earth casts, all-changing reversals, and the mixed Hexagram 64 to 18 case. The tool is for reflection and entertainment only and is not medical, legal, financial, safety, or other professional advice.
Methodology & sources
Generate six groups of three fair local Web Crypto bits under the declared H=3 and T=2 convention. Sum each bottom-first group to classify 6 as changing yin, 7 as stable yang, 8 as stable yin, and 9 as changing yang. Convert current and changed polarities to literal lower Lines 1-3 and upper Lines 4-6 trigram keys, then use the source-backed lower-row/upper-column King Wen matrix to find the numbered hexagram and the official Unicode English name/code point. Fail explicitly if Web Crypto is unavailable; do not persist or transmit the cast.
Frequently asked questions
- How are the six I Ching lines generated?
- The browser generates 18 secure random values locally, groups them into six sets of three coins, assigns heads 3 and tails 2, and records each 6, 7, 8, or 9 line from bottom to top.
- What creates the transformed hexagram?
- Old yin lines with total 6 change from broken to solid, and old yang lines with total 9 change from solid to broken. Stable 7 and 8 lines keep their polarity.
- Does this tool provide a guaranteed prediction or a full Liuyao reading?
- No. It identifies the sourced three-coin line structure, trigrams, King Wen hexagram, and changes for reflection. It does not perform Najia calendar calculations or predict facts.
