About Backward Digit Span Test
Backward Digit Span is a short, deterministic reverse-entry game for casual, repeatable play. It presents five product-authored digit strings in one fixed route. The first source contains three digits, and each following round adds one digit until the fifth source contains seven. Every restart restores the same visible route: 583, 1946, 72038, 461905, and 8391724. The task is simple to inspect: study a source string, hide it, and enter those exact digits from last to first. Because the fixtures never shuffle, the page can disclose its entire challenge and every state transition can be verified without random data.
Each round has three explicit phases. The source begins covered. Choose Reveal digits or press Enter to display it. Study it for as long as you choose because the game has no countdown. Choose Hide and answer backward or press Enter again. The source disappears, the digit field receives focus, and the prompt asks for a response of the same length. Type with ordinary digit keys, use Backspace to edit, and press Enter or choose Submit backward response when the entry is complete. Letters, punctuation, and entries longer than the current fixture are rejected by the game logic. An incomplete response is not counted as a miss.
Backward means a precise positional operation, not a loose memory judgment. For example, the disclosed source 583 requires 385, while 72038 requires 83027. The zero keeps its position in the reversed sequence rather than being removed or interpreted as part of a number. The source strings are handled as text made only of digits, so there is no arithmetic, leading-zero conversion, localization rule, or numerical rounding involved. A response must match every reversed character exactly before the round advances.
The manual reveal and hide flow is intentional. Automatic timing can behave differently on a busy device, under reduced browser resources, or during an acceptance check. It may also turn a position-reversal exercise into a reaction-speed task. Here, the player decides when the study phase ends. There is no asynchronous wait, interval, animation race, reaction measurement, or hidden timeout. The same action always produces the same state, giving touch, pointer, and keyboard players a transparent route through the game.
Every correct response advances to the next covered fixture and awards 200 points. Completing all five rounds therefore yields exactly 1,000 points. The first incorrect full-length response is recoverable: the same fixture returns to its covered phase, ready to reveal and try again. A second incorrect response anywhere in the run produces a visible deadlock. Completed and deadlocked runs freeze reveal, hide, input, and submit actions, so extra clicks or repeated key presses cannot change the score or result. Restart clears the round, score, misses, entry, feedback, and terminal state.
The complete core flow is keyboard accessible. Press Enter while the source is covered to reveal it, and press Enter again while it is visible to hide it and focus the native input. Use the number keys to enter the backward response, Backspace to correct it, and Enter to submit. The shared Restart control begins a fresh run. The shared game shell also supports its site-wide boss key: pressing Escape twice opens the spreadsheet view, and pressing Escape twice again returns to the game. Visible buttons remain available for pointer and touch use, and status text reports round, digit count, misses, feedback, score, and terminal outcome.
All play happens in the browser. The route, reversal rule, scoring, retry behavior, and deadlock condition live in pure client logic. The game does not upload responses, call a gameplay API, create an account, fetch a runtime dataset, load an external image, or start a background process. Best score is stored only in local browser storage when that feature is available. If storage is unavailable, the current run still works and only the optional best-score display is omitted.
Despite the familiar phrase in its name, this page is not a clinical, educational, psychometric, IQ, cognitive, or standardized digit-span assessment. Its fixture strings, unlimited study time, retry allowance, scoring, and terminal rules are product choices rather than a published testing protocol. A 1,000-point result means only that the disclosed five-round entertainment route was completed under these rules. A pure string-reversal function defines the exact expected response. A full exact match awards 200 points and advances, so five matches produce exactly 1,000. An incorrect full-length response replays the current fixture from hidden, and the second mistake deadlocks. Invalid or incomplete input is ignored as an attempt. Complete and deadlocked states return unchanged for every later game action.
