A response must match every reversed character exactly before the round advances, and the entry field enforces this by silently rejecting letters, punctuation, whitespace, and any input longer than the current fixture length. An incomplete entry, such as typing two digits in a three-digit round, is not treated as an attempt at all, so you can keep editing with Backspace and resubmit without spending your recoverable first miss.
