How to use
- 1.Choose a Western zodiac sign you already know; the tool does not calculate a sign from a birth date.
- 2.Read its Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable result, seasonal position, and the complete four-sign modality group.
- 3.Use the visible twelve-sign matrix to verify the lookup, or Reset without saving the selection.
About Zodiac Modality Calculator
Zodiac Modality Calculator is a direct lookup for the three modalities, also called qualities or quadruplicities, used in Western astrology. Select one known zodiac sign and the page returns Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable plus every sign in the same four-member group. The result is a cultural classification, not a scientific assessment of behavior, adaptability, leadership, or personal worth.
The mapping has twelve entries. Cardinal contains Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Fixed contains Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Mutable contains Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Every sign belongs to exactly one modality, and each modality contains exactly four signs. A visible reference matrix makes the whole table inspectable rather than hiding it behind one output label.
Astrological sources connect modalities with positions in the seasonal sign sequence. Cardinal signs begin each of the four sign seasons, fixed signs occupy the middle, and mutable signs conclude the sequence. The interface reports those neutral structural labels—begin, middle, and end—without expanding them into guaranteed personality traits. Seasonal language reflects the conventional Northern Hemisphere framework used by the cited sources.
Direct sign selection is intentional. The tool does not ask for a date or decide which sign a birthday belongs to, so it stays separate from the site’s Zodiac Sign Calculator. A user can inspect the modality of any known placement, not only a popular sun sign. Accurate Moon, rising, or planetary sign calculation requires astronomical data and lies outside this simple table lookup.
Astrodienst lists the cardinal group as Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn; the fixed group as Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius; and the mutable group as Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. The Old Farmer’s Almanac and Tarot.com independently publish the same three groups and seasonal positions. Tests use literal source-authored expectations rather than deriving expected rows from production data.
The result identifies the selected sign, its modality, its structural season position, and all four signs in the group. It does not rank modalities, calculate a dominant quality, compare two people, or infer a complete birth chart. Reset restores the initial selection. The wording avoids statements that someone must lead, resist change, or adapt simply because a sign has one table label.
All logic runs locally in the browser. The widget performs no fetch, account login, third-party astrology request, model call, cookie write, localStorage write, or sessionStorage write. The selected sign exists only in the current component state. Because the lookup needs no name, date, time, or location, none of those values are requested.
Native selection and Reset controls maintain a 44-pixel minimum target and visible focus. Modality identity appears as text rather than relying on decorative color. The table uses readable headings and can remain within its own responsive boundary on small screens. Result details wrap cleanly at narrow widths, and status changes are available as readable text.
Verification checks twelve literal sign-to-modality goldens, unique coverage of every sign, three groups of exactly four, and the published cardinal/fixed/mutable order across all twelve signs. UI contract checks enforce direct selection, group and season-position output, privacy, cultural limitations, and control sizing. These tests validate the table implementation, not the truth of astrological character claims.
Methodology & sources
Store a literal twelve-entry Western zodiac table. Map Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn to Cardinal/beginning; Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius to Fixed/middle; and Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces to Mutable/end. Validate a selected sign, return its modality, structural season position, and complete four-sign group, and display the full matrix. Do not calculate a sign from a date, score a chart or person, persist the selection, or transmit it.
Frequently asked questions
- Which signs are cardinal, fixed, and mutable?
- Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.
- What does modality mean in this calculator?
- It is the traditional structural grouping of signs at the beginning, middle, or end of each seasonal sign sequence. The tool does not treat it as a scientific personality score.
- Does this tool calculate a full birth chart or dominant modality?
- No. It classifies one sign you already know. Full chart calculations and dominant-quality scoring require additional placements and rules outside this lookup.
