About Pressure Converter

Pressure is force spread over an area — one newton pushing on one square metre equals one pascal (Pa), the SI base unit this converter uses as its single reference point. Because a pascal is tiny, real-world pressures are usually quoted in larger units: kilopascals (kPa), megapascals (MPa), bar, or the pound per square inch (psi). This free pressure converter turns any value into all of them instantly, entirely in your browser, with nothing uploaded to a server. Every unit exists because a particular field found it convenient. Engineers and North American tire gauges read in psi; the bar and its cousins the millibar (mbar) and hectopascal (hPa) dominate industrial and weather work, where 1 bar is close to sea-level air pressure. The standard atmosphere (atm) is defined as exactly 101325 Pa. Medicine and meteorology still measure in mercury columns — blood pressure in mmHg, barometric pressure in inHg — while the technical atmosphere (kgf/cm²) lingers on older machinery and pressure gauges. Weather reports in North America often quote a barometer in inHg, where 29.92 inHg marks a standard-pressure day, and hPa and mbar are numerically the same, which is why a 1013 hPa forecast equals 1013 mbar.

The conversions people look up most are quick to read off here. 1 bar equals 14.5038 psi and 100 kPa; 1 atm equals 14.6959 psi, 1.01325 bar, or 760 torr; and 1 psi equals 6894.76 Pa or about 0.0689 bar. So a car tire pressure of 32 psi is roughly 2.21 bar or 221 kPa, and a 100 psi compressor rating is about 6.89 bar. Going the other way, kpa to psi is common too: 200 kPa is about 29.0 psi. One subtlety is worth knowing: mmHg and Torr look identical but are defined differently. A Torr is exactly 1/760 of a standard atmosphere (133.3224 Pa), while the conventional millimetre of mercury is 133.322387 Pa, fixed from a reference mercury density. They differ by only about one part in seven million — negligible for everyday use — but this tool keeps them as separate units so scientific work stays exact. Multiply the psi value by 6.89476, because 1 psi equals 6894.76 Pa, which is 6.89476 kPa. So 30 psi is about 206.8 kPa and 50 psi is about 344.7 kPa. To go from kpa to psi instead, divide by 6.89476 — 200 kPa is roughly 29.0 psi.
