About Paired Associates Memory Game

Paired Associates Memory is a five-question one-way recall game. Begin with a study ledger that links each cue phrase to one invented scene phrase. Hide the ledger, read the returning cue, and choose the scene that was paired with it. Five clean recalls produce exactly 1,000 points.

All ten phrases are original product fixtures created for this page. The study links are Copper Kite to Moon Harbor, Paper Finch to Velvet Ladder, Amber Key to Quiet Orchard, Tin Comet to Blue Lantern, and Moss Bell to Glass Meadow. They are deliberately imaginative labels, not facts, idioms, translation pairs, psychological norms, or imported educational material.

The study sheet and recall interface are different mounted branches. Study displays the five links in a clear Cue to associate ledger and does not mount the three Recall choice buttons. Choosing Hide pairs and start recall removes the ledger before the first cue and its option tray appear. Once hidden, the page tests memory rather than leaving the complete pair list covered by styling.

Each cue returns once in the fixed A-through-E order. Copper Kite uses Moon Harbor in option position 2. Paper Finch uses Velvet Ladder in position 3. Amber Key uses Quiet Orchard in position 1. Tin Comet uses Blue Lantern in position 3. Moss Bell uses Glass Meadow in position 2. The deterministic key is therefore 2, 3, 1, 3, 2.

A correct choice adds 200 points and advances immediately to the next cue. There is no time bonus, random option shuffle, adaptive sequence, streak multiplier, or hidden penalty. The visible score is simply the number of correctly recalled links multiplied by 200, so the fifth clean answer always produces exactly 1,000.

One distinct wrong choice is recoverable. Repeating that same wrong option on the same question is recognized as the same attempt and does not add another error. A second different wrong choice, whether on the same cue or later, closes the recall file in a terminal deadlock. Choice indices outside the three-button tray and selections attempted before Study is hidden leave the state unchanged.

This is not the existing flip-card Memory Match game. There are no face-down cards, paired duplicates, turn-back animation, or search for two positions. The task is directional: see cue and associate together during Study, then retrieve the associate when only the cue returns. That distinction is stated on the page and encoded in the state machine.

Pointer and touch users receive three large text buttons for every cue. Keyboard users can press H, Enter, or Space to hide the study ledger, then press 1 through 3 to answer each prompt. The status reports the current cue, recalled count, score, and distinct misses. Restart returns to the complete study sheet rather than dropping the player directly into Recall.

The independent test restates every cue, associate, option tray, and answer index as literal original fixtures instead of deriving an oracle from the production list. It executes all five correct choices, checks the exact 200-point increments and 1,000-point completion, proves a choice during Study is atomic, deduplicates a repeated miss, triggers the second-miss deadlock, rejects invalid option indices, freezes both terminal states, and confirms deterministic restart.

Everything runs inside the browser with semantic text and buttons. There is no account, upload, camera, microphone, external asset, random service, model, personal data, or network request. The phrase set does not change between visits, and only the shared best completed score can remain in localStorage.

Double-press Escape for the simulated spreadsheet boss screen, then repeat the gesture to return to the unchanged recall question. Methodology & sources

Five immutable original records define a cue, its associate, a three-choice tray, and a zero-based correct index. Study and Recall are exclusive phases. Starting Recall hides the complete ledger. Correct choice advances and adds 200. Wrong attempts are signed by question and option index, so identical repeats dedupe; two distinct signatures deadlock. Invalid indices, Study-phase choices, and actions after completion or deadlock return the same state.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a card matching game?
This is directional cue-to-associate recall: the study ledger disappears, one cue returns, and you retrieve its linked scene. There are no duplicate cards to flip.
Are the phrase pairs sourced facts?
No. Copper Kite, Moon Harbor, and the other labels are invented fixtures with no external factual or language claim.
What counts as two errors?
The first distinct wrong option is recoverable, an identical repeat on that cue is ignored, and a second different wrong choice closes the run.
