About Word Chain Memory

Word Chain Memory is a five-round ordered-recall game built for a short, repeatable browser break. Each round reveals a chain that contains every earlier word plus one new word. Hide the chain, type the complete sequence from the beginning, and preserve the original order through the final five-word file.

The fixture is original product content rather than a vocabulary standard, educational assessment, or imported word list. The fixed chain is ember; ember harbor; ember harbor velvet; ember harbor velvet cactus; and ember harbor velvet cactus orbit. Those ordinary tokens are used only as game pieces. They make no factual category, spelling-level, diagnostic, or language-proficiency claim.

Reveal and recall are separate interface states. During Reveal, the current ordered list is visible as individual word blocks. Choosing Hide words and recall unmounts that list from the document before the answer input appears. Recall does not merely blur, cover, recolor, or visually move the answer off screen, so inspecting the active recall region does not expose the sequence.

Type every word shown for the current file, separated by whitespace. The validator trims leading and trailing whitespace, accepts repeated spaces, and compares ASCII letters without case sensitivity. EMBER HARBOR therefore matches ember harbor. It never invents boundaries: emberharbor remains one token and cannot stand in for two words. Punctuation, digits, and blank submissions are rejected as harmless no-ops.

Each correct chain awards exactly 200 points and advances to a new Reveal state. Five clean recalls produce exactly 1,000 points. There is no timer bonus, random multiplier, speed penalty, or hidden difficulty adjustment. The disclosed answer route is identical on every load, which makes the score auditable and lets a player focus on ordered memory rather than luck.

A first distinct wrong recall is recoverable. The same normalized wrong sequence submitted again is recognized as a repeat and does not consume another error. A second different wrong sequence closes the run in a visible deadlock, after which answer and phase actions freeze. Restart is the explicit recovery path and restores round one, zero score, zero errors, and the first Reveal.

Keyboard play is complete. Press H to remove the revealed chain, type in the normal text field, and press Enter to submit. Pointer and touch users can use the same labeled Hide and Check controls, each with a practical minimum target size. The live feedback explains whether an attempt was correct, wrong, duplicated, invalid, complete, or closed.

The independent logic test restates all five chains as literal fixtures rather than computing expected answers from the game table. It executes the complete 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 score route; checks case and whitespace normalization; proves glued words stay glued; verifies blank and invalid input atomicity; repeats the same wrong answer; triggers a second-error deadlock; and confirms terminal freeze and deterministic restart.

Everything runs locally in this page. There is no account, upload, microphone, camera, model, remote word service, network request, downloaded asset, or personally identifying data. The game stores only the shared best completed score in this browser. Current input and round state disappear when the page is closed or restarted.

This game differs from Number Memory Test and Backward Digit Span because the material is a growing ordered word chain rather than digits, and it differs from Memory Match because there are no hidden card pairs. Methodology & sources

Five immutable cumulative word arrays contain one through five original tokens. Reveal and recall are exclusive phases. Input is trimmed, limited to ASCII-letter tokens separated by whitespace, lowercased with the en-US locale, and compared position by position. A correct recall adds 200 and advances; a wrong signature is keyed by round and normalized token sequence so identical repeats dedupe. Two distinct errors deadlock; completion, deadlock, invalid input, and out-of-phase actions are frozen or atomic.

Can I use capital letters or extra spaces?
Yes. Case and repeated whitespace normalize transparently, while word order and word boundaries remain exact.
Is the answer still present during recall?
No. Hiding the chain unmounts the visible answer list before the recall form appears.
What happens after a wrong answer?
One distinct mistake is recoverable, an identical normalized repeat is ignored, and a second different mistake closes the run.
