Time Converter
Instantly convert any time value across ten units — from nanoseconds to years — in your browser.
Privacy: your files never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser.
How to use
- 1.Type the number you want to convert into the Value field.
- 2.Choose the unit that number is measured in from the From unit dropdown.
- 3.Read the equivalent amount in every other unit from the results grid — it recalculates live as you type.
- 4.Check the note below the grid: seconds through weeks are exact, while months and years use average lengths (365.25 days per year, 30.4375 days per month).
About Time Converter
The Time Converter turns a single time value into its equivalent across ten different units at once, so you never have to reach for a calculator or memorize how many seconds are in a day. Enter a number, choose the unit it is measured in, and the tool instantly shows the same amount expressed as nanoseconds, microseconds, milliseconds, seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. Type 90 and pick minutes and you will see 1.5 hours; enter 2 days and you get 48 hours; enter 1 year and you get 365.25 days. Every field updates live as you type, so you can explore relationships between units without pressing a button.
This converter is built for the many everyday moments when time is written in the wrong unit. Developers reading logs in milliseconds or timestamps in nanoseconds can see what those numbers mean in human-friendly minutes or hours. Students and scientists checking homework or lab measurements can move between microseconds and seconds with confidence. Anyone planning a project, a workout interval, a cooking step, or a billing period can translate weeks into days or months into hours in a second.
Accuracy matters, so it helps to know exactly how each unit is defined. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks use exact, fixed constants: a minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 3,600 seconds, a day is 86,400 seconds, and a week is 604,800 seconds. Sub-second units are equally precise — a millisecond is one thousandth of a second, a microsecond one millionth, and a nanosecond one billionth. Months and years are different because calendar months range from 28 to 31 days and years vary with leap days, so no single fixed length is calendar-exact. For unit conversion this tool uses the widely adopted averages: one year is treated as 365.25 days, the Julian-year convention that averages in one leap day every four years, which equals 31,557,600 seconds. One month is defined as that year divided by twelve, giving 30.4375 days or 2,629,800 seconds. The interface states this clearly and marks months and years as averages, so you always know a converted month or year is a mean value rather than a specific date range on the calendar.
It is worth noting how this differs from two related tools. A duration calculator measures the elapsed time between two specific clock times or dates, answering questions like how long is it from 9:15 to 17:40. A time zone converter shifts a single moment between regions, telling you what 3 PM in New York is in Tokyo. This Time Converter does neither of those; it only rescales one quantity of time from one unit into another. If you need elapsed time or time zones, use the duration or time zone tools instead.
Everything is computed locally in your browser with plain arithmetic — no data is uploaded, no account is required, and there is no server round trip involved, just fast, private math that works instantly and offline once the page has loaded.
Methodology & sources
Each unit is expressed in seconds and converted as value × seconds[from] ÷ seconds[to]; seconds through weeks use exact constants, while a year is the Julian 365.25 days (31,557,600 s) and a month is year ÷ 12 = 30.4375 days (2,629,800 s), so months and years are averages, not calendar-exact.
Frequently asked questions
- How many days are in a month or year here?
- This tool uses average lengths, not calendar-exact ones. A year is treated as 365.25 days and a month as 30.4375 days (that year divided by twelve). Real calendar months run 28–31 days and leap years shift the total, so treat month and year results as averages.
- Why is a year 365.25 days?
- 365.25 days is the Julian-year convention widely used for unit conversion. It averages in one extra leap day every four years (365 + 1/4 = 365.25), which smooths out the fact that most years have 365 days and every fourth has 366. In seconds that is 31,557,600, and a month is simply that value divided by twelve.
- How is this different from a duration calculator?
- A duration calculator measures the elapsed time between two specific times or dates (for example, from 9:15 to 17:40). This Time Converter instead rescales one quantity of time from one unit to another (for example, 90 minutes into 1.5 hours). Use the duration calculator for time-between questions and this tool for unit-to-unit conversion.
- Are the small units like milliseconds and nanoseconds exact?
- Yes. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, and weeks are exact fixed constants, and the sub-second units are exact fractions of a second: a millisecond is 1/1,000, a microsecond is 1/1,000,000, and a nanosecond is 1/1,000,000,000 of a second. Only months and years are averages.
