About Military Time Converter

This military time converter changes any time between the 12-hour AM/PM clock and the 24-hour military clock the instant you type it, in whichever direction you need. Pick a direction, enter the time, and the tool shows the 24-hour form, the 12-hour form, and how to say the military time out loud, with no button to press and nothing sent to a server.

The two systems describe the same day in different ways. The 12-hour clock splits the day into two halves of twelve hours each and marks them AM (from Latin ante meridiem, before midday) and PM (post meridiem, after midday), so the numbers 1 to 12 repeat twice. The 24-hour clock, also called military time, counts straight through from 00:00 to 23:59 without repeating, which is why it never needs AM or PM and can never be misread. Militaries, hospitals, airlines, railways, and most of the world outside North America use it precisely because 18:00 can only mean one thing, while 6:00 needs an AM or PM to be clear.

The two hardest points are midnight and noon, and this converter gets them right. 12 AM is not 12 in 24-hour time, it is 00:00, the very start of the day, because AM means the hours after midnight. 12 PM is 12:00, noon, the middle of the day. So 12:30 AM is 00:30 (just after midnight) while 12:30 PM is 12:30 (just after noon). From 1 PM onward you simply add 12: 1 PM is 13:00, 6 PM is 18:00, and 11:59 PM is 23:59, the last minute of the day. Going the other way, any 24-hour value of 13 to 23 becomes that number minus 12 with PM, 00:xx becomes 12:xx AM, and 12:xx stays 12:xx PM.

Military time is written as four digits with no colon, so 6:00 AM is 0600 and 6:00 PM is 1800. Saying it out loud follows a set pattern: the hours and minutes are read as two-digit groups, a leading zero is spoken as oh or zero, and a whole hour ends in hundred. So 0800 is oh eight hundred hours, 1800 is eighteen hundred hours, 2359 is twenty-three fifty-nine hours, and 0000 is zero hundred hours, or simply midnight. The converter prints this spoken form for you so you know exactly what to say on a radio, in a briefing, or on a shift handover.

Common uses include reading a hospital medication chart or a flight itinerary that lists 24-hour times, writing a shift schedule so 1900 is never mistaken for 7 AM, decoding an order that says report at 0500, or answering the everyday question what time is 1800 (it is 6:00 PM). The tool checks your input too, so an impossible time like 2400, a 13 AM, or 60 minutes is flagged instead of silently converted. Everything runs in your browser with no signup and no limit. Frequently asked questions

Is 12 AM midnight or noon, and what is 12 PM?
12 AM is midnight, the start of the day, which is 00:00 in 24-hour time. 12 PM is noon, the middle of the day, which is 12:00. AM means before midday and PM means after midday, so the hours just after midnight are 12:xx AM and the hours just after noon are 12:xx PM.
How do I convert PM time to military time?
For 1 PM through 11 PM, add 12 to the hour: 1 PM is 13:00, 6 PM is 18:00, 11 PM is 23:00. The exception is 12 PM (noon), which stays 12:00. Minutes never change, so 6:45 PM is 18:45.
What time is 1800 in normal time?
1800 is 6:00 PM. In 24-hour (military) time any hour from 13 to 23 is the PM hour plus 12, so subtract 12 to get the 12-hour value: 18 minus 12 is 6, giving 6:00 PM. It is read aloud as eighteen hundred hours.
How do you say military time out loud?
Read the four digits in two pairs and end a whole hour with hundred: 0800 is oh eight hundred hours, 1800 is eighteen hundred hours, and 2359 is twenty-three fifty-nine hours. Midnight, 0000, is zero hundred hours. A leading zero is spoken as oh or zero.
Why do the military, hospitals and airlines use 24-hour time?
The 24-hour clock runs from 00:00 to 23:59 without repeating, so it never needs AM or PM and cannot be misread. That removes any chance of confusing 6 in the morning with 6 in the evening — a critical safeguard for medication times, flight schedules and operations.
