About Commonly Confused Words Quiz
Commonly Confused Words Quiz is an eight-round context game about spellings that are easy to mix up. Each round presents one complete original sentence with a single blank and two visible choices. Select the word whose documented part of speech and ordinary sense fit that exact sentence. The route covers effect and affect, advice and advise, breath and breathe, principal and principle, stationary and stationery, desert and dessert, quiet and quite, and lose and loose. The point is contextual discrimination, not memorizing a slogan that one spelling is always a noun or always a verb.
The evidence boundary is explicit. Princeton WordNet 3.1 is the primary source for the accepted sense or part of speech in every row. Exact Cambridge Dictionary or Cambridge Grammar pages independently cross-check each contrast. The eight sentence prompts were written for this game; Cambridge definitions and examples are not copied into the dataset. Cambridge pages are linked only so the review can be repeated. WordNet permits redistribution when its complete notice is preserved, and the site publishes the WordNet 3.1 Copyright 2011 notice alongside the tool.
English words can be polysemous. Affect can be a specialist noun, effect can be a formal verb, and principal can be an adjective as well as a school leader. This game therefore does not teach an absolute rule that would fail outside the shown sentence. Correctness means that one displayed choice is supported in the current frozen context. A different sentence can change the required word. If both options could reasonably work in one standard reading, that prompt is excluded rather than resolved with a hidden preference.
Press Start to begin the fixed route. Choose the first or second option by clicking, tapping, or pressing 1 or 2. A correct answer advances once, increases the visible streak, and preserves the recreational score. A wrong answer stays on the same prompt, resets the current streak, adds one error, and costs up to 25 points. The score never drops below zero. Because the prompt remains visible, the mistake becomes an immediate retry instead of a hidden answer reveal. The summary reports eight completed contexts, total errors, best streak, and points from this route.
Each visible attempt has its own interaction token. A double click from an earlier attempt, a held key, an invalid option, input before Start, and input after completion are ignored. Opening the spreadsheet-style boss screen also blocks Start, either answer, and Restart until the overlay closes. Pointer and keyboard controls feed the same guarded state transition, so there is no second scoring path with different rules. Restart returns to the same eight audited contexts, which makes the behavior reproducible but also means later runs benefit from familiarity.
The layout uses ordinary buttons, written option labels, visible focus, and live status text. It does not depend on color to identify correct progress or an error. The two-choice grid collapses cleanly on a narrow screen, and long prompts wrap rather than forcing horizontal scrolling. No answer, streak, or typed personal text is uploaded. The shared game shell may remember only a best point total in local browser storage. The page does not create a learner profile, account, leaderboard, or classroom record.
This is an entertainment exercise, not a clinical/IQ/cognitive assessment. It does not estimate vocabulary size, assign a CEFR level, diagnose a language or learning condition, establish school or employment readiness, measure intelligence, or show that practice improved a brain function. Eight repeated contexts cannot support placement, treatment, eligibility, or professional conclusions. Use the page as a transparent spelling-and-usage puzzle, and consult an appropriate educator or current reference when the wording of a real document carries important consequences.
Methodology & sources
Freeze exactly eight original one-blank contexts. Anchor each accepted meaning or part of speech to a literal WordNet 3.1 offset and independently cross-check the contrast on exact Cambridge pages without copying Cambridge text. Require two distinct choices, one accepted answer, unique prompts and literal EXTERNAL_GOLDEN_CASES. A wrong current-token answer stays on the round, increments errors, resets streak and deducts at most 25 points; a correct answer advances once. Reject pre-start, stale, duplicate, repeated-key, invalid, post-completion and boss-overlay inputs. Interpret results only within this fixed recreational route.
