About Fortune Cookie Generator
Fortune Cookie Generator selects a short playful message from an original Lizely-authored collection. It is designed for a light break, writing prompt, team icebreaker, placeholder card, or small moment of novelty. The word “fortune” describes the familiar cookie format; the result is not a forecast, omen, decision tool, or claim about what will happen.
The library contains thirty-six unique English messages divided evenly across four product-defined categories. Focus contains gentle observations about small tasks and clear starts. Curiosity contains questions, unusual angles, and playful connections. Creativity contains notes about drafts, constraints, remixes, and unfinished ideas. Everyday contains light scenes involving pages, pens, walks, music, snacks, fresh air, browser tabs, and chairs. Every line was written for this tool rather than copied from a quotation, proverb, commercial fortune database, or public figure.
Choose All categories to draw from the complete pool, or narrow the pool to Focus, Curiosity, Creativity, or Everyday. Generate message requests a fresh secure integer from the browser's Web Crypto API. The result panel displays the selected category and full line. Copy message uses the Clipboard API only after a user action and reports either success or a clear manual-copy fallback. Reset returns the category to All, removes the result, and restores a stable idle panel.
Random selection uses more than a simple remainder operation. A 32-bit unsigned space is not evenly divisible by most pool lengths, so directly taking value modulo length would give a tiny advantage to early entries. The pure selection function computes the largest complete multiple of the pool length below 2^32 and rejects values in the incomplete tail. It retries with new secure values, with a 128-attempt safety limit for a broken injected source. Accepted values then map evenly to a valid array index.
The random source is injected into the pure function, allowing deterministic tests without replacing the browser path with a different algorithm. Tests cover the first and last accepted values, the rejected tail, retry behavior, invalid entropy, invalid pool sizes, complete and category-filtered pools, unique IDs and text, four equal category counts, message length bounds, and the absence of restricted claims. The component itself calls globalThis.crypto.getRandomValues and never uses Math.random, Date.now, an effect-time random draw, or a server endpoint.
The idle first render is intentional. Generating in React render would produce server/client hydration differences and could change a result without a user action. Here, no message exists until Generate is selected. Changing category clears the old result so a line from the previous category cannot remain under the new label. Random-source failure clears the output and produces an explicit browser-support message.
The messages are playful microcopy rather than individualized advice. The generator produces no lucky numbers and no health, financial, relationship, legal, medical, or safety recommendation. It does not analyze a question, accept a name or birthday, or tailor output to a user. It should not be used to make a decision. Related divination tools are separate cultural experiences with their own stated evidence and boundaries.
All state remains in the current browser tab. The tool sends no prompt or result to a server and writes nothing to localStorage, sessionStorage, IndexedDB, or a user account. Clipboard access occurs only when Copy is pressed and may be denied by the browser without affecting the visible message. The responsive action row wraps on small screens, the select and buttons meet the 44-pixel target, and output text wraps inside the result card.
Because the message library and categories are original product fixtures, the evidence classification is none rather than reference. There is no external factual table to cite or golden result to pretend is authoritative. Verification instead binds the library's size, uniqueness, category distribution, safe wording, unbiased index algorithm, browser crypto path, privacy, and user-visible states.
Methodology & sources
The tool contains 36 original unique messages across four equal categories. A pure category filter builds the pool, while an injected unsigned-32-bit source feeds rejection sampling over the complete 2^32 space; values in the incomplete modulo tail retry, with a 128-attempt failure boundary. The UI source is Web Crypto getRandomValues, with stable idle rendering and explicit Generate, Copy, category-clear, failure, and Reset states. Tests verify library uniqueness and safe wording, equal category counts, every random boundary, invalid entropy, absence of weak random/time/storage/network APIs, privacy, 44px controls, wrapping, and browser test IDs.
Frequently asked questions
- Are these real quotations or copied fortune-cookie messages?
- No. All 36 English micro-messages were written for this tool and are not attributed quotations, proverbs, or copied commercial fortunes.
- How is a message selected?
- The browser supplies a secure unsigned 32-bit value. Rejection sampling removes modulo bias before the value selects an entry from the chosen category pool.
- Does the generator predict the future or provide lucky numbers?
- No. The lines are playful prompts only. The tool generates no lucky numbers, predictions, personalized claims, or health, financial, relationship, or legal advice.
