About Clothing Size Converter

A clothing size converter translates a size from one country's system into the others, so a US 8, UK 12 and EU 40 dress all point to the same garment. Women's and men's apparel use different rules, so choose the right one before reading across. For women's tops and dresses the numeric systems line up predictably: UK = US + 4, and EU = US + 32. A US 4 is a UK 8 and an EU 36; a US 8 is a UK 12 and an EU 40; a US 12 is a UK 16 and an EU 44. The EU column is the continental/French number printed on most Zara, Mango and H&M labels. International letter sizing is roughly XS = US 0-2, S = US 4-6, M = US 8-10, L = US 12-14, XL = US 16-18, but letters have no legal standard and drift between brands. Men's tops, jackets and suits are sized by chest measurement in inches, and the US and UK share the same number: a US 40 chest is a UK 40. Europe adds 10, so that US/UK 40 becomes an EU 50; a US 38 is an EU 48 and a US 44 is an EU 54. In letters, roughly S = 34-36, M = 38-40, L = 42-44, XL = 46-48. To convert, choose women's or men's, tell the tool which system your known size is in (US, UK or EU), and type the number. It instantly shows the matching size in all three systems plus the closest international letter size, and if your exact number is not a standard size it snaps to the nearest one and says so. Why do the systems differ at all? Each country standardized its ready-to-wear sizing independently, tying labels to different base measurements and step intervals, so the same body maps to different numbers. That also means these charts are a starting point, not a guarantee. Two brands in the same country can cut a medium differently, and vanity sizing shifts numbers over time. Fabric stretch, garment cut (slim versus relaxed) and how you like a piece to fit all change the right size for you. Use the converted size to narrow your choice, then confirm against the specific brand's own size chart using your body measurements (chest or bust, waist and hips) and, whenever possible, try the item on before buying. Treat the letter size (S/M/L) as the loosest guide of all, since it is the least standardized part of any conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert US clothing size to EU?
For women's tops and dresses, add 32 to the US size to get the EU size: a US 4 is an EU 36, a US 8 is an EU 40, and a US 12 is an EU 44. For men's jackets and tops, add 10 to the US chest size: a US 40 is an EU 50.
What is the difference between women's and men's size conversions?
They use different rules. Women's apparel is numbered by dress size, where UK = US + 4 and EU = US + 32. Men's tops, jackets and suits are numbered by chest inches, where the US and UK use the same number and the EU size is 10 higher (US 40 = UK 40 = EU 50).
What do S, M and L correspond to in numeric sizes?
As a rough guide, women's S is about US 4-6 (EU 36-38), M is US 8-10 (EU 40-42), and L is US 12-14 (EU 44-46). Men's S is about a 34-36 chest, M is 38-40, and L is 42-44. Letter sizing is not standardized, so always check the brand's chart.
How much bigger is a UK size than a US size?
For women's clothing a UK size is four numbers higher than the US size, so a US 6 is a UK 10 and a US 10 is a UK 14. For men's jackets, tops and suits the US and UK use the same number, so a US 40 is also a UK 40.
Why should I still try clothes on if I know my converted size?
Conversion charts are a starting point, not a guarantee. Two brands in the same country can cut a size differently, vanity sizing shifts numbers over time, and fabric and cut change the fit. Use the converted size to narrow choices, then check the brand's own size chart and try the item on.
