How to use

About Elemental Alchemy

Elemental Alchemy is a finite fictional discovery game built around an original 17-entry archive. It begins with Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, then reveals 13 additional names through a fully disclosed recipe ledger. These combinations are product-authored puzzle rules. They do not represent chemistry, historical alchemy, a crafting standard, material safety, or an authoritative elemental system. No external dataset, random recipe, remote request, or hidden content is involved.

The five visible tiers run from tier zero through tier four. Six first-tier results come directly from different base pairs: Fire plus Water makes Steam, Earth plus Water makes Reed, Air plus Water makes Mist, Earth plus Fire makes Ember, Air plus Fire makes Spark, and Air plus Earth makes Dust. A canonical pair key makes every recipe order-independent, so Water plus Fire produces the same Steam result as Fire plus Water.

Later recipes build on discovered entries. Earth plus Steam makes Geyser. Fire plus Reed makes Lantern. Mist plus Spark makes Aurora. Dust plus Ember makes Cinderstone. Cinderstone plus Geyser makes Skyforge, Aurora plus Lantern makes Beacon, and Beacon plus Skyforge makes Concord. Each result is unique, and an independent reachability pass proves that all 17 entries can be discovered from the four starting entries.

Select any two discovered archive buttons and choose Combine. The tray allows the same entry twice, which is useful for demonstrating an unlisted pair such as Fire plus Fire. Pointer and touch controls share the same pure reducer as keyboard play. Keyboard users focus the archive, move through discovered entries with Arrow keys, load an entry with Enter or Space, press M to combine, X to clear, and R to restart.

A successful new recipe adds one archive entry, clears the tray, and moves the cursor to the discovery. Repeating a known recipe is an exact no-op: it cannot duplicate an entry or score. An unknown or undiscovered ID is also rejected without mutation. The first distinct unlisted pair is recoverable, repeating that same canonical pair is deduplicated, and the second distinct unlisted pair seals the archive until Restart.

Score remains zero while the archive is incomplete. Discovering Concord as the seventeenth entry completes the finite archive and moves directly to exactly 1,000 points. The exact winning route follows the 13 ledger rows in order, starting with the six base combinations and ending with Beacon plus Skyforge. A deterministic losing route combines Fire with Fire, repeats it without a new penalty, then combines Water with Water for the second distinct invalid pair.

Independent verification owns a separate literal recipe list rather than deriving expected pairs from the production map. It compares every pair, result, and tier, checks unique element IDs, canonical-pair uniqueness, result uniqueness, pair reversal, and full iterative reachability. It then replays all 13 discoveries step by step, checks the exact archive length after every result, confirms score is zero until final completion, and exercises known, invalid, repeated, undiscovered, selection, cursor, and terminal paths.

The complete ledger remains visible on the page, including recipes whose results are still locked. This makes the challenge one of planning and careful input rather than guessing an undisclosed fact. Restart reconstructs the same archive and rules. All gameplay remains local to the browser with no account, upload, server computation, model call, timer, probability, or new dependency. The 1,000 score only records completion of this authored puzzle and is not a scientific or cognitive assessment.

Methodology & sources

Define four starting entries, thirteen unique order-independent fictional pairs, thirteen unique results, and seventeen total entries across tiers zero through four. Canonicalize a pair by sorting its two IDs, require both IDs to be known and discovered, add only a new mapped result, and keep partial score at zero until the full archive awards exactly 1,000. Treat a known recipe and repeated invalid pair as exact no-ops, allow one distinct invalid pair, deadlock on the second, and freeze terminal states. Independently restate every literal recipe, prove unique pairs and results, iteratively reach all seventeen entries from the four bases, and replay the exact winning and losing routes.
