Volume Converter translates a nonnegative quantity among eleven metric, U.S. liquid, cubic, and imperial units. Enter a number, select the source and destination units, and choose Convert volume. Supported SI-related choices are milliliters, liters, and cubic meters. NIST explains that one liter is one cubic decimeter, one milliliter is one cubic centimeter, and one cubic meter contains one thousand liters. The BIPM SI summary independently confirms that the liter is an accepted special name for the cubic decimeter. These relationships are powers of ten and are not estimates.
The U.S. choices are explicitly liquid measures: fluid ounce, cup, liquid pint, liquid quart, and liquid gallon. One U.S. liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, which equals 3.785411784 liters using the exact international inch. It contains 128 U.S. fluid ounces, 16 cups, 8 liquid pints, or 4 liquid quarts. The page does not include the differently sized U.S. dry pint, dry quart, or bushel, so the word gallon never silently changes between liquid and dry systems.
Cubic inches and cubic feet are geometric volumes derived from the exact inch. One cubic inch equals 16.387064 milliliters, and one cubic foot equals 1,728 cubic inches or 28.316846592 liters. These units are useful for containers and spaces specified by linear dimensions. They describe the same three-dimensional quantity as liters even though their names come from cubed length units.
The imperial gallon is a separate choice and equals 4.54609 liters. It is larger than the U.S. liquid gallon. Imperial fluid ounces are also different from U.S. fluid ounces, so this version intentionally includes only the imperial gallon rather than presenting an incomplete imperial hierarchy. Always check whether a source from the United Kingdom, United States, or another market uses imperial, U.S. customary, or metric labels before transferring a number.
Internally, the converter multiplies the source value by its liters-per-unit factor and divides by the destination factor. Conversion factors are stored at their defined precision, and the answer is formatted to twelve significant digits only after calculation. Eight external golden cases cover the SI identities, U.S. gallon hierarchy, cubic factors, and imperial gallon. A reference-liter line makes factor selection easier to audit.
Zero is accepted because an empty capacity can validly be described as zero volume. Negative values, blanks, non-finite values, and magnitudes above the supported numeric range return clear errors rather than being clamped. The converter measures volume only; it does not convert liters to kilograms or fluid ounces to ounces by mass. That requires the material's density, temperature, and sometimes composition.
Kitchen conventions can round a U.S. cup to 240 mL or a tablespoon to 15 mL for convenient recipes. This tool instead uses the exact U.S. liquid hierarchy derived from the gallon, so one U.S. cup is 236.5882365 mL. A recipe published with rounded metric equivalents may therefore differ slightly. Follow the convention stated by the recipe or regulated specification when exact agreement matters.
Use this converter for general capacity comparisons, packaging, classroom work, recipes with known unit systems, and geometric volume checks. It does not account for thermal expansion, calibration tolerances, meniscus reading, container fill level, or density. For trade measurement, laboratory preparation, medication, or safety-critical work, use calibrated equipment and the conversion rules required by the relevant authority.
