About Tile Calculator
Tile Calculator estimates how many whole rectangular tiles are needed for one rectangular surface. Enter surface length and width, tile length and width, choose units independently, add an optional extra percentage, and optionally state how many tiles come in a box. The calculation runs locally and returns base pieces, purchase pieces, theoretical area, and box count.
The core geometry is rectangle area equals length multiplied by width. OpenStax explains that both dimensions must be expressed in compatible units before multiplying. This calculator converts every length to meters first, calculates surface and tile areas in square meters, divides surface area by one tile’s area, and rounds the final physical piece count upward.
International feet and inches use exact SI relationships documented by NIST. One inch equals 0.0254 meter exactly, and one international foot equals 0.3048 meter exactly. Centimeters use 0.01 meter. Because both sides are converted before area is calculated, a 10-foot surface and a 12-inch tile can be compared without mixing linear and square conversion factors.
Without extra allowance, pieces to cover equals the ceiling of surface area divided by tile area. A fractional result always requires another whole tile. A 1-meter square surface with 33-centimeter square tiles has a theoretical ratio slightly above nine and therefore reports ten whole tiles rather than nine.
Extra allowance is a user-selected percentage from zero through fifty. It multiplies the theoretical unrounded tile ratio, and the calculator rounds upward once at the end. For a 100-tile exact layout and 10% allowance, the result is 110. For a 384-tile base with 10%, the theoretical purchase amount is 422.4, so the result is 423.
The page does not claim that 10% or any other percentage is universally correct. Straight layouts, diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, room irregularity, cuts, breakage, batch matching, future repairs, installer practice, tile fragility, and supplier policy can require different allowances. Enter the percentage agreed for the actual job.
If tiles per box is supplied, box count equals the ceiling of purchase tiles divided by pieces per box. This assumes every box contains that exact piece count. Many products are sold by area rather than by piece, may contain mixed shapes, or publish nominal rather than actual dimensions. Check the carton label and supplier coverage value before ordering.
All four dimensions must be positive and no greater than 100,000 in the selected unit. Extra allowance is bounded at 50%, tiles per box must be a whole number from 1 through 10,000, and estimates above 100 million pieces are rejected. The calculator uses an epsilon-scale correction only to prevent binary floating-point noise from turning an exact integer such as 110 into 111.
This is an area estimate, not a layout engine. It does not subtract cabinets, doors, islands, windows, drains, niches, or other exclusions; add multiple rooms; calculate grout; account for tile orientation; optimize cuts; enforce expansion joints; or produce a setting plan. It treats both the surface and every tile as perfect rectangles.
Nominal tile dimensions can differ from measured dimensions, and grout joints affect modular layout even when area remains similar. Pattern repeats, borders, trim pieces, mosaics on sheets, partial cartons, minimum orders, dye lots, and return rules also matter. Do not use the displayed piece count as the sole purchasing instruction for an expensive or irreversible installation.
Measure each surface at multiple points, break irregular rooms into verified rectangles, calculate sections consistently, and ask the installer or supplier how to combine them. Confirm actual product dimensions, box coverage, reserve stock, and waste policy. Keep the measurement sketch and receipt. The page does not store project data or contact a merchant.

- Why does the calculator round up?
- Tiles are discrete pieces, so any positive fraction of a tile requires another whole piece before cuts and reuse are assessed.
- Is 10% always the right waste allowance?
- No. It is only an editable starting value; layout, cuts, breakage, pattern, room shape, and installer practice determine the appropriate allowance.
- Can surface and tile dimensions use different units?
- Yes. Every linear dimension is converted to meters before square areas are compared.
- Does the result replace a tile layout plan?
- No. It estimates rectangular area only and does not optimize cuts, grout joints, patterns, obstacles, or multiple rooms.
