About Cat Age Calculator

A cat age calculator converts your cat's real age into equivalent human years using the veterinary-standard curve, not the outdated 'multiply by seven' rule. Here is the short answer: a cat's first year of life equals about 15 human years, the second year adds roughly 9 more (reaching about 24 by age two), and every year after that is worth about 4 human years. So a 3-year-old cat is around 28 in human terms, a 5-year-old about 36, and a 10-year-old roughly 56.

Why isn't it simply seven years per year? Cats mature far faster than people early on, then age more gradually. A six-month-old kitten is physically and behaviourally closer to a 10-year-old child, and a one-year-old cat is already a teenager, nothing like the '7' a linear rule would give. Because that early growth is so rapid, this calculator breaks the first two years down month by month: 3 months is about 4 human years, 6 months about 10, 12 months about 15, 18 months about 21, and 24 months about 24. Enter an age in months for kittens to see the finer detail.

The tool also shows your cat's life stage, which vets use to guide diet, activity, and check-up frequency. Following the International Cat Care and AAHA/AAFP framework: Kitten (0-6 months) is rapid growth and socialisation; Junior (7 months-2 years) is the adolescent 'teenager' phase; Adult and Mature (3-10 years) is the settled prime of life; and Senior (11 years and older) is when cats slow down and benefit from closer veterinary monitoring. Many cats now live into their late teens or early twenties, so a 20-year-old cat, about 96 in human years, is no longer unusual.

To use it, type your cat's age, choose years or months, and the equivalent human age and life stage update instantly. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.

A few practical notes. These figures are averages: breed, weight, indoor-versus-outdoor life, and overall health all shift the real picture, so treat the number as a friendly guide rather than a medical verdict. The 'times seven' shortcut over-ages young cats and under-ages old ones, which is exactly why veterinarians abandoned it. And if your cat is seven or older, ask about a senior wellness exam, because early screening for kidney, thyroid, and dental disease is the single biggest health win for aging cats. Frequently asked questions

How old is my cat in human years?
Vets use a curve, not a flat multiplier. A cat's first year is about 15 human years and the second reaches about 24; after that, add roughly 4 human years for each cat year. So a 3-year-old cat is about 28 and a 10-year-old is about 56.
Why isn't my cat's age just multiplied by 7?
The 'times 7' rule is a myth. It over-ages young cats (a 1-year-old is a teenager, not a 7-year-old child) and under-ages older ones. Veterinarians dropped it in favour of the 15 / 24 / +4 curve used here.
Why do the first two years count for so much?
Cats grow up fast. They reach sexual maturity and near-full size within the first year and finish maturing in the second, so those two years pack in about 24 human years before the pace slows to roughly 4 per year.
How are cat life stages defined?
Using the International Cat Care and AAHA/AAFP model: kitten (0-6 months), junior (7 months-2 years), adult and mature (3-10 years), and senior (11 years and older). The stage guides diet, activity, and how often your cat should see a vet.
How do I work out a kitten's age in human years?
Switch the unit to Months and enter the kitten's age. The first two years are mapped month by month: 3 months is about 4 human years, 6 months about 10, and 18 months about 21, so half a year already equals roughly a 10-year-old child.
