About Word Family Builder

Word Family Builder is an eight-round derivational word game with a visible evidence boundary. Each round shows three members of one English word family, labels each part of speech, and hides the fourth. Choose the missing noun, verb, adjective, or adverb from four options. Every option in a round has the requested part of speech and comes from a different family, so the answer cannot be found merely by choosing the only word with an adjective-like or adverb-like ending.

The primary data comes from Princeton WordNet 3.1. Each displayed spelling has the stated noun, verb, adjective, or adverb entry, and WordNet's documented derivationally related form and derived-from-adjective pointers, with same-synset lexical bridges where needed, connect the relevant records. The official Academic Word List family table from Victoria University of Wellington independently places every selected four-word set in one published family. The complete WordNet license notice is distributed with the site. No dictionary definitions, example paragraphs, or copyleft lexical table are copied.

The fixed families are analyse, analysis, analytical, analytically; create, creation, creative, creatively; vary, variation, variable, variably; conclude, conclusion, conclusive, conclusively; restrict, restriction, restrictive, restrictively; exclude, exclusion, exclusive, exclusively; justify, justification, justifiable, justifiably; and signify, significance, significant, significantly. Tests hold all eight four-part clusters as literal external golden cases. They require exactly eight unique families, distinct members inside every family, and unique route targets. The production route cannot pass by deriving its own expected answers.

A WordNet derivational pointer and an Academic Word List family grouping describe a lexical relationship; they do not mean that the four words are interchangeable in a sentence. A noun occupies a different grammatical role from its related verb, adjective, or adverb. The game therefore prints the part-of-speech label next to every shown member and asks for one explicit category. It does not teach a universal suffix rule. English morphology contains spelling changes, multiple senses, irregular formations, and families without all four categories. Those cases are outside this intentionally small verified route.

Examine the three labelled family members, then select one of the four numbered choices with a button or number key 1 through 4. A correct answer advances exactly once to the next family. A wrong answer adds one error while keeping the same family visible for another try. Every accepted attempt creates a fresh visible token. A stale click, repeated held key, invalid option, duplicate response, and action after completion are rejected without changing points or progress.

Opening the spreadsheet-style boss screen blocks choices and Restart until the overlay is closed, so hidden keys cannot silently complete a family. Touch, pointer, and keyboard controls share the same guarded transition. The interface uses semantic buttons and written noun, verb, adjective, and adverb labels; meaning never relies on colour alone. The family cards and choice grid wrap for a 390-pixel viewport, support zoom, and expose status updates through live text. There is no drag-and-drop requirement.

After all eight families, the summary reports completed rounds, errors, and recreational points. The scoring rule is product-authored and is not part of WordNet or the Academic Word List. The shared game shell can remember a best point total in local browser storage, but it does not save free-text answers, build a learner profile, create an account, or upload choices. Restart repeats the same route, so memorizing it is expected and prevents any standardized interpretation of later scores.

This tool is narrower than a dictionary or morphology course. It does not generate every legal derivative, judge a sentence, explain pronunciation, estimate vocabulary size, or assign difficulty levels. The eight source-grounded clusters provide a small auditable practice route and nothing more. The disclosed scope, source list, literal fixtures, and same-POS distractors are designed to prevent an attractive interface from hiding invented lexical data.

This is an entertainment exercise, not a clinical/IQ/cognitive assessment. It does not measure English proficiency, diagnose a language or learning condition, assign a CEFR level, rate intelligence, establish school or employment readiness, or show whether your brain has improved. Eight repeated families cannot support treatment, eligibility, placement, health, or professional conclusions. Use it as a transparent word-association puzzle. For formal language evaluation, teaching, or accessibility support, use an appropriate qualified educational service.

Methodology & sources

Use exactly eight families whose noun, verb, adjective and adverb spellings and derivationally-related-form or derived-from-adjective links are present in WordNet 3.1 and whose four members independently appear together in Victoria University of Wellington's Academic Word List family PDF. Rotate the missing POS across the fixed route and populate all four options with that same POS from different families. Each accepted wrong answer advances an attempt token so duplicate events cannot deduct twice. Reject invalid, duplicate, stale, repeated-key, post-completion and boss-overlay mutations. Independent literal EXTERNAL_GOLDEN_CASES assert all 32 members and uniqueness. No suffix rule, CEFR level, or proficiency inference is produced.
