  2. 2.If the choice is rejected, remain on the same context and use its semantic anchors to try again; a rejected phrase may still be valid in another context.

About Phrasal Verbs Quiz

Phrasal Verbs Quiz is a fixed eight-context game for recognizing one clearly disclosed sense of a common English phrasal verb. Each round shows an original sentence with one blank and four real phrasal-verb choices. Choose the phrase that completes the displayed meaning. A correct answer opens a separate meaning card, so the answer and its short explanation stay visible until you choose Next. A wrong answer remains on the same context, adds one error, and costs up to 25 points. The route starts at 800 points and never goes below zero.

The eight target phrases are look after, run out of, find out, turn down, put off, call off, carry on, and give up. They are not presented as a complete vocabulary list or as phrases with only one definition. Phrasal verbs are often polysemous: turn down can also refer to reducing a setting, put off can describe discouraging someone, and give up can refer to surrendering something. The game scores only the narrow sense selected by the full sentence on screen. Its feedback explicitly says that a phrase rejected in one round may be valid in another context.

Every context was written for this product rather than copied from a dictionary lesson. The meaning cards are short original paraphrases. Cambridge Dictionary is the primary source for each phrase-to-sense fact, and Collins English Dictionary provides an independently maintained cross-check. The source pages establish the lexical relationship; their definitions, example sentences, pronunciation recordings, translations, and proficiency labels are not reproduced. Sixteen exact links are listed below so the eight decisions can be audited one by one.

The route deliberately separates two choices that learners can confuse. Put off appears in a sentence that moves a meeting from today to next Tuesday, which selects the delay-until-later sense. Call off appears in a sentence that cancels a flooded concert completely and says it will not be rescheduled. The other contexts also contain direct semantic anchors: a cat must remain safe and fed, the printer paper has none left, an online schedule supplies an unknown fact, a low salary leads to refusing an offer, a discussion continues after an interruption, and repeated failed repairs lead someone to stop trying. The three distractors attached to each context are frozen rather than randomly borrowed from another round, because a phrase safe as a distractor in one sentence can become valid in another.

The interaction is deterministic and entirely local. Press Start, then use the visible buttons or plain number keys 1 through 4. Enter moves from a revealed meaning card to the next context. Tab, Enter, and Space continue to work through the native buttons. Held keys, composition events, modifier shortcuts, unsupported keys, events from an input or editable element, invalid option indexes, duplicate clicks, old question tokens, old meaning-card tokens, input before Start, and input after completion are ignored. Restart restores the same audited route, score, and progress fields to their initial values.

The spreadsheet-style boss screen preserves the exact quiz state. While it is visible, answer buttons, number shortcuts, Next, and Restart are guarded no-ops. The covered game controls are removed from the tab order and accessibility tree, focus moves to the overlay, and closing it restores the previous control when that element still exists or a stable current action otherwise. No hidden answer can advance behind the overlay. Because the game has no timer, switching tabs does not alter score or progress.

The result summary reports only correct contexts, errors, and the remaining points for this fixed bank. It does not calculate vocabulary size, language level, CEFR band, school placement, intelligence, reading ability, memory, attention, or any clinical characteristic. This is an entertainment exercise, not a clinical/IQ/cognitive assessment. It is also not a dictionary replacement or a general grammar grader. Use the linked dictionaries when you need additional senses, usage labels, regional notes, pronunciation, or examples.

No account, upload, microphone, network request, runtime dictionary lookup, paid API, or server processing is involved. The question bank, reducer, score, and meaning cards run in the current browser tab. The shared game shell may store a best point total locally when browser storage is available; if storage is unavailable, the current route still works. The fixed data is duplicated in an independent literal test fixture so an incorrect production table cannot validate itself through a round trip. Tests enumerate all 24 wrong-choice classes, confirm the eight dual-source targets, exercise stale answer and Next events, enforce the score floor, and freeze the completed state.

Methodology & sources

Freeze eight original, sense-disambiguated contexts and per-row four-choice sets. For every answer, record an exact Cambridge Dictionary primary page and an independent Collins English Dictionary cross-check, while paraphrasing the visible meaning card instead of copying source wording. Keep put off as an explicit later-date delay and call off as a complete cancellation. Start at 800 points, deduct up to 25 for each accepted wrong attempt, use phase-and-attempt tokens to reject duplicate or stale actions, reveal the meaning card before explicit advancement, and freeze the terminal state. Scope every result to the displayed context-specific senses and retain the exact G4 entertainment disclaimer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a phrasal verb have a meaning not shown in this quiz?
Yes. Many phrasal verbs are polysemous. Each round scores only the narrow sense selected by its complete original context, and the source links can be used to inspect additional senses.
What is the difference between put off and call off here?
The put off round moves a meeting to a stated later date, so it means delay. The call off round says a concert is cancelled completely and will not be rescheduled.
Does the score measure my English level?
No. It reports performance only on this fixed eight-context entertainment route. It is not a vocabulary-size, CEFR, educational, intelligence, cognitive, or clinical assessment.
