About Definition Recall Quiz

Definition Recall Quiz reverses the familiar vocabulary multiple-choice direction. Instead of showing a word and asking you to recognize a meaning, it shows one pinned definition and asks you to type the exact source headword. The route contains eight fixed single-lemma noun records without publishing their answer order in the instructions. Each round is independently auditable and available without an account or network dictionary request.

The primary table comes from Princeton WordNet 3.1. Every selected noun record has hexadecimal word count 01, meaning that its synset contains one lemma in the WordNet data file. Tests pin the exact data.noun offset, definition segment, answer, and 01 marker. Records whose displayed clue would contain their own answer are excluded, and only the definition segment before any WordNet example is shown, so source examples cannot leak a target.

Single-lemma status creates a precise source contract, not a universal claim about language. A person may think of a broader synonym, description, subtype, or related word that makes sense in conversation. The game asks for the exact WordNet headword attached to the shown frozen record. A different plausible response is outside this tiny route; it is not labelled bad English. Exact Cambridge Dictionary pages independently confirm the ordinary meanings, but their definitions and examples are not copied into the tool.

Press Start, read the definition, and type one headword. The input applies Unicode NFKC compatibility normalization, lowercases letters, and trims outer whitespace. Punctuation, extra words, and an unreviewed synonym list are not silently accepted. Press Enter or use Submit. A matching answer advances to the next record. A mismatch stays on the same record, adds one error, costs up to 25 points, and creates a fresh attempt token so a duplicate browser event cannot deduct twice.

When recall stalls, Reveal next letter expands a visible prefix by one character. Each effective hint costs 10 points once, but the final character always remains hidden so the hint control cannot display the complete answer. Pressing Hint after that safe limit is reached is a no-op, as is replaying a stale hint from an earlier attempt. Points start at 800 and never become negative. The route remains finishable after any number of errors or hints. After eight correct headwords, the summary reports completed definitions, errors, hints, and remaining recreational points.

All mutations share guarded paths. Enter submission and the Submit button call the same evaluator. A held shortcut, invalid state, old attempt token, double submit, input before Start, and action after completion cannot advance or change points. Opening the spreadsheet-style boss screen blocks Start, Submit, Hint, and Restart until the overlay is closed. The answer input disables automatic capitalization, correction, and spell checking so the browser cannot transform one frozen answer into another without the player seeing it.

The single-column definition card, input, controls, and status text fit a narrow mobile viewport and remain usable by keyboard, touch, pointer, zoom, and assistive technology. Meaning is expressed with words rather than color alone. No typed answer is uploaded or saved. A local best score may be retained by the shared game shell, but there is no learner profile, leaderboard, classroom record, adaptive difficulty, or remote answer grading.

This is an entertainment exercise, not a clinical/IQ/cognitive assessment. It does not estimate vocabulary size, assign a CEFR level, diagnose dyslexia or another condition, measure memory or intelligence, establish educational placement, or show that a brain function improved. Eight repeated source definitions cannot support school, employment, treatment, eligibility, health, or professional conclusions. Use the page as a transparent exact-headword recall puzzle, not as a substitute for a dictionary, teacher, or formal language evaluation.

Methodology & sources

Use exactly eight pinned WordNet 3.1 data.noun records whose hexadecimal w_cnt is 01, whose unique answer does not appear as a whole word in the displayed definition segment, and whose ordinary sense is independently confirmed by an exact Cambridge page without copying Cambridge wording. Literal EXTERNAL_GOLDEN_CASES pin offsets, glosses, answers and 01 markers. Apply NFKC compatibility normalization, lowercase and outer whitespace trimming. Wrong current-token submissions stay on the round and cost at most 25 points; each newly revealed prefix letter costs 10 once, with the final character always hidden. Reject stale, duplicate, invalid, repeated-key, boss-overlay and terminal actions.

Frequently asked questions

How to play Definition Recall Quiz?
Start the fixed route, read each WordNet definition, and type its exact pinned headword. Submit with Enter or the button, and use the next-letter hint when needed; the final character always remains hidden.
Can hints reveal the entire answer?
No. Each effective hint adds the next letter to a visible prefix and deducts 10 points once, but the final character always remains hidden. Further clicks at that limit do nothing.
Does Definition Recall Quiz estimate vocabulary size or CEFR?
No. It has eight fixed source records and no norm group, sampling model, CEFR mapping, placement protocol, or professional interpretation.
