About Antonym Match

Antonym Match is a five-round English vocabulary game about direct lexical opposition. Each round presents one prompt word, its grammatical category, and a short sense note. Four candidate words appear beneath it. Choose the candidate that expresses the direct opposite of the displayed meaning in the same part of speech. Every correct match awards 200 points, so five rounds total exactly 1,000.

Opposition is more precise than general contrast. Two words may frequently appear on different sides of a discussion without being lexical antonyms. A movement word is not automatically the opposite of a temperature word. A related probability term is not necessarily the direct opposite of capability. The game therefore rejects candidates that are merely associated, different, or contextually contrasted.

The displayed sense is essential because English words are polysemous. A common verb can describe believing a statement, receiving an object, admitting a person, or agreeing to an invitation. Its direct opposite changes with that sense. An adjective can refer to physical temperature, emotional tone, current popularity, or electrical state. The interface names the intended sense before selection so the expected relationship is bounded and inspectable.

Princeton WordNet 3.1 supplies the primary lexical evidence. Its raw adjective and verb data files encode antonymy with an exclamation-mark pointer between synsets or lemmas. Each winning pair in these five rounds is backed by a literal direct pointer for the shown grammatical category and sense. The evidence fixture records the source and target offsets instead of treating an AI-generated similarity judgment as proof.

Cambridge Thesaurus pages provide an independent check. Each of the five prompt pages returned HTTP 200 during implementation, and its corresponding opposite appeared in the downloaded page content. Using a second lexicographic source reduces the risk of relying on one database's organization or confusing a related but non-opposite term with a direct antonym.

The five fixtures cover both adjectives and verbs. Their correct positions vary across all four candidate slots rather than repeating one answer location. Every round contains four unique candidate strings. Distractors share plausible surface properties, and several have the same part of speech as the prompt, but they do not carry the required direct-opposite relationship in the disclosed sense.

The answer is not exposed before selection. All candidate buttons share the same markup. No aria label, data attribute, CSS class name, hidden text, or status message marks the winning option. The highlighted style indicates only the player's keyboard cursor. Candidate order is fixed for reproducible testing but varies by round, so position alone does not reveal correctness.

Touch and pointer interaction is direct: tap a candidate to submit it. Candidate buttons are native controls with at least 44 pixels of height. Text can wrap within the button, and the mobile layout remains a single bounded column before expanding to two columns on wider screens. Minimum-width and overflow protection prevent a long candidate from creating horizontal page overflow.

Keyboard interaction covers the entire puzzle. Left or Up moves to the previous choice, and Right or Down moves to the next; movement wraps around the four candidates. Enter submits the highlighted choice. When a native button already has focus, its native Enter click is allowed to handle the action so the global shortcut cannot submit twice. Restart is always available through the shared GameShell.

Wrong choices use deterministic signatures made from the round and candidate index. Repeating the same wrong selection does not count twice. A first distinct mistake leaves the round open and reports that the choice is not the direct opposite for the stated sense. A second different mistake deadlocks the run until Restart. This makes accidental duplicate events harmless while limiting blind guessing.

Invalid negative, out-of-range, or fractional candidate indices are atomic no-ops. Unknown cursor directions also do nothing. Completion and deadlock are terminal: selection and keyboard movement cannot alter the score, level, cursor, or history afterward. Restart restores round one, the first highlighted candidate, zero score, and an empty mistake list.

The shared GameShell stores the best completed score locally when browser storage is available and supplies a double-Escape boss key. Press Escape twice within the timing window to replace the puzzle with a spreadsheet-like cover, then twice again to return. Boss mode does not alter the lexical fixture, score, or active candidate.

All gameplay executes locally in the browser. The game sends no selections to a server, requests no account, uses no paid service, and adds no package dependency. It is recreational vocabulary practice, not an adaptive test, reading-level diagnosis, language certification, or intelligence measure. Completing the game proves only that these five fixed, source-checked relationships were identified.

Focused tests keep external evidence independent from product evaluation. A private literal fixture stores nine golden cases: five direct pointer relationships and four same-part-of-speech or related-sense boundaries with no qualifying pointer.
