How to use

  1. 1.Choose your unit - kilometers or miles - and enter the distance you ran.
  2. 2.Type your finish time as hours, minutes and seconds.
  3. 3.Read your pace in min/km and min/mile, your speed, and race finish predictions instantly below.

About Pace Calculator

This running pace calculator turns the two numbers every runner already has - the distance you covered and the time it took - into your exact pace the moment you type them. Choose kilometers or miles, enter your distance, add your finish time as hours, minutes and seconds, and it instantly returns your pace in both minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile, your speed in km/h and mph, and predicted finish times for the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon at that same effort. Nothing is uploaded and there is no button to press.

What pace actually means: pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, written as minutes and seconds per kilometer (min/km) or per mile (min/mile). A pace of 5:00 min/km means every kilometer takes five minutes. Pace is the inverse of speed: speed tells you how far you travel in an hour, pace tells you how long each unit of distance takes, so a lower pace number is faster while a higher speed number is faster. The two are linked by simple arithmetic - speed in km/h equals 3600 divided by your pace in seconds per kilometer, so a 5:00 min/km pace (300 seconds) is exactly 12 km/h.

Min/km versus min/mile: the only difference is the length of the yardstick. One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometers, fixed by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, so your pace per mile is always your pace per kilometer multiplied by 1.609344. A 5:00 min/km runner is running about 8:03 min/mile. Runners in the United States and United Kingdom usually think in minutes per mile, while most of the rest of the world uses minutes per kilometer, and this tool shows both at once so you never have to convert in your head.

Why pace matters for training: pace is how runners plan and pace a race. Knowing your goal pace lets you hold an even effort instead of starting too fast and fading, and it lets you translate a training pace into a realistic race prediction. Easy runs, tempo runs, interval sessions and long runs each have their own target pace band, and comparing your actual pace against those bands is how you know whether a run was truly easy or secretly too hard. The race predictions here assume you hold the pace you entered for the whole distance, which is a good check for shorter races but tends to be optimistic for the marathon, where fatigue slows most runners in the final kilometers.

How to use your result: to find the pace for a goal finish time, enter the race distance and your target time and read the pace back. To convert an existing pace into the other unit, enter one kilometer or one mile as the distance and that pace as the time. Everything runs locally in your browser, so it is fast and completely private.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate running pace?
Divide your time by your distance. Pace in min/km is total time divided by kilometers, so 50:00 for 10 km is 3000 seconds / 10 = 300 seconds, which is 5:00 min/km. This calculator does it the moment you type and also gives your pace per mile and your speed in km/h and mph.
What is the difference between min/km and min/mile?
Both measure pace - time per unit of distance - but use a different yardstick. One mile is exactly 1.609344 km, so your pace per mile equals your pace per km multiplied by 1.609344. A 5:00 min/km pace works out to about 8:03 min/mile. The tool shows both figures at once so you never have to convert by hand.
How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed and pace are inverses of each other. Speed in km/h equals 3600 divided by your pace in seconds per kilometer, so 5:00 min/km (300 seconds) is 12 km/h, or about 7.46 mph. A lower pace number and a higher speed number both mean you are running faster.
What pace do I need to run a marathon in a target time?
Divide your goal time by the distance. A 4-hour marathon is 240 minutes over 42.195 km, about 5:41 min/km or 9:09 min/mile. Enter the race distance and your goal time in the calculator above and it shows the exact pace you need to hold for the whole race.
Are the race finish-time predictions accurate?
They assume you hold the pace you entered for the entire distance, so they are a reliable check for short races like the 5K and 10K. For the half marathon and especially the marathon they tend to be optimistic, because most runners slow in the later kilometers as fatigue builds.
