Chinese Zodiac Calculator maps a whole Gregorian year from 1900 through 2100 to the conventional sequence Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Enter a year and select Find zodiac animal. The result also names the previous animal because a Chinese zodiac year begins at Lunar New Year rather than January 1. A person born in January or early February may therefore belong to the preceding zodiac year.
The calculation anchors 2020 to Rat and advances one position for each Gregorian year, wrapping after Pig. Both the Consulate-General of China in Durban and the Metropolitan Museum of Art describe a repeating 12-year cycle in this order. The Met independently identifies Lunar New Year beginning January 25, 2020 as the Year of the Rat. Twelve external golden cases cover every animal from 2020 through 2031, while additional tests cover earlier cycles, later cycles, input boundaries, uniqueness, and modulo wraparound.
This tool intentionally does not pretend that a Gregorian year alone supplies a fully date-accurate sign. Lunar New Year falls on a different Gregorian date each year. Instead of embedding an unaudited multi-century festival-date table, the result states the limitation and shows the preceding animal. If the birth date is near the boundary, check the exact Lunar New Year date for that year in a maintained Chinese calendar source, then use the displayed current or previous animal accordingly.
The year field accepts decimal digits only. Signs, spaces, decimal points, exponent notation, empty input, and years outside 1900–2100 fail rather than being trimmed, rounded, or silently capped. The accepted range is a product boundary chosen to keep the utility focused; the 12-year mathematical cycle itself is not claimed to begin in 1900 or end in 2100. The input year is not uploaded or saved by Lizely.
English animal naming varies across translations. This tool uses Goat for the eighth animal; reliable English sources may use Goat, Ram, or Sheep for 羊. That naming variation does not change its eighth position in the cycle. Some cultures following related lunisolar calendars also substitute another animal, such as Cat for Rabbit. This page presents the conventional Chinese sequence documented by its cited sources and does not claim to calculate Vietnamese, Tibetan, Japanese, or other regional zodiac variants.
The result is a cultural calendar lookup, not a prediction. It does not generate personality traits, compatibility scores, lucky colors, elements, yin-yang classifications, heavenly stems, earthly branches, a Four Pillars chart, or a fortune forecast. It computes a nonnegative remainder from year minus 2020, selects that cycle position, and selects the preceding position with the same wrap-safe method. Tests assert table length, unique values, all twelve sourced annual outputs, Rat/Pig boundaries, and the minimum and maximum accepted years. This independent fixture catches an accidentally reordered animal, a wrong anchor, or a negative-modulo regression.

- Why does the result show a previous animal?
- A year-only input cannot resolve the moving Lunar New Year boundary. The previous animal makes that limitation explicit instead of assigning a potentially wrong sign.
- Why does this page say Goat when another source says Sheep or Ram?
- Those are English translation variants for the eighth animal 羊. Its position in the conventional Chinese cycle remains the same.
