The Three Numbers Your Flooring Order Needs

Every flooring order boils down to three numbers, and the Flooring Calculator shows all three at once.

The first number is the room area: length × width. A room that is 12 ft by 10 ft is 120 square feet; a 4 m by 3 m room is 12 square metres. Keep both measurements in the same unit and the answer comes out in that unit squared. The second number is the waste allowance. You never lay a floor with zero offcuts — planks and tiles get trimmed at the walls, around doorways and against pipes, and a few pieces crack or come damaged. The calculator applies your chosen percentage to the room area with the formula area × (1 + waste ÷ 100). At 10% waste, a 120 sq ft room becomes 132 sq ft to buy.

The third number is the number of boxes to buy. Flooring is sold by the box, and each box states how much area it covers — for example 20 sq ft or 2 m². The calculator divides the area-with-waste by the coverage per box and rounds up, because you cannot buy a fraction of a box. For the same 132 sq ft at 20 sq ft per box, that is 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6, which rounds up to 7 boxes.

Rounding up is the whole point. Buying exactly 6.6 boxes' worth would leave you short mid-job, and dye lots vary between deliveries so a top-up box rarely matches. Many installers keep one extra box as spares for future repairs — a cracked tile or a water-damaged board is much easier to replace with leftover material from the same batch.

Choosing a Waste Percentage by Layout

The waste percentage is the one input that changes the most from one project to the next. A small bedroom with a straight plank layout needs only a modest allowance; a large lounge tiled on the diagonal will throw away a noticeable share of every box.

A 5–10% allowance suits a straight or brick-bond layout where most offcuts come from the edges of the room. A 15–20% allowance covers diagonal cuts, herringbone and parquet layouts and large or heavily patterned tiles, because the angled cuts and pattern matching throw away more material than a simple straight run.

Handling L-Shaped and Multi-Room Projects

For an L-shaped room, sketch it as two rectangles that share a wall. Measure each one separately, then add the two areas together before applying the waste percentage and box coverage. The calculator only handles one rectangle at a time, so this is the one step you do manually. The same trick works for alcoves, bay windows and built-in wardrobes that eat into a room — sketch each flat area as its own rectangle and add them all up.

For several rooms in the same project — a flat with a living room, two bedrooms and a hallway — run the calculator for each rectangular piece, add the areas, then apply the waste percentage once to the combined total. You can keep the waste percentage the same across all rooms if they share the same product and layout, or split the calculation if, say, a hallway laid on the diagonal needs a different percentage from the bedrooms.

For staircases and steps, the calculator does not apply, because treads and risers are usually counted by the piece rather than by area. Order a small extra amount — usually one or two boxes — and use the leftover planks or tiles from the rooms above as additional spares.
