About Strikethrough Text
Strikethrough Text Generator turns ordinary text into crossed-out characters you can paste anywhere — even in places that offer no formatting buttons at all, like a Twitter/X bio, an Instagram caption, a Discord username, a Reddit comment, or a plain-text form field.
The trick is Unicode combining characters. Instead of applying a rich-text style (the kind that vanishes the moment you copy it into a plain-text box), this tool inserts an invisible combining mark directly after every visible character. That mark is a nonspacing overlay: your device stacks it on top of the character before it, drawing a line straight through the glyph. The result is not a font and not real formatting — it is still ordinary text made of Unicode code points, so it survives copy and paste into apps that would strip normal styling. For example, the letters in "abc" each get a U+0336 COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY appended, producing a̶b̶c̶.
You get several styles, because different overlays draw different lines. Strikethrough (U+0336) is the classic long line through the middle. Short strike (U+0335) is a tighter overlay. Slash strike (U+0338) draws a diagonal solidus across each character. Underline (U+0332) sits a line beneath the text, and tilde strike (U+0334) lays a wavy line over it. All of them are applied the same way — one combining mark per visible character — and all are copy-paste ready.
A few honest caveats, because this is a Unicode hack rather than true formatting. First, accessibility: screen readers ignore combining overlays and simply read the underlying letters, so someone using assistive technology hears the plain text without any sense that it is "crossed out." Never rely on strikethrough alone to signal that something is cancelled, wrong, or a discount price. Second, compatibility: rendering depends on the font and platform. Most modern browsers, phones, and chat apps stack the line cleanly, but a few older systems or unusual fonts may show the mark slightly off-center or as a separate box. Third, some platforms with aggressive text filters may reject unusual character sequences. When in doubt, paste a short sample first to confirm it displays the way you expect.
Everything happens locally in your browser. There is no upload, no account, and no network round-trip — your text is transformed character by character on your own device the instant you type, and the styled result is yours to copy with one click.
Frequently asked questions
- How does strikethrough text work without a formatting option?
- It uses Unicode combining characters. A special invisible mark (for example U+0336, the combining long stroke overlay) is inserted after each visible character, and your device stacks a line through that character. Because the result is still plain Unicode text rather than rich-text formatting, it survives copy and paste into apps that strip normal styling, like social bios and chat boxes.
- Will the strikethrough show up correctly everywhere I paste it?
- Usually, but not guaranteed. Rendering depends on the font and platform: most modern browsers, phones, and chat apps display the overlay line cleanly, while a few older systems or unusual fonts may show it slightly off-center or as a separate box. Some platforms also filter unusual character sequences. Paste a short sample first to confirm it looks right.
- Is this accessible to screen reader users?
- No — combining overlay marks are ignored by screen readers, which read only the underlying letters. Someone using assistive technology hears the plain text with no sense that it is crossed out, so never rely on strikethrough alone to signal that something is cancelled, incorrect, or a sale price. Use it for visual flair, not as the sole carrier of meaning.
