About Kaomoji Copy and Paste
Kaomoji are Japanese emoticons built entirely from Unicode characters — think (◕‿◕), ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, or the famous table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻. This tool lets you browse a curated set of 120+ kaomoji grouped by mood, then copy any one to your clipboard with a single click.
The word "kaomoji" combines the Japanese kao (face) and moji (character). Unlike Western emoticons such as :-) or :P, which you read sideways by tilting your head, kaomoji are read upright — the eyes, mouth, and hands sit exactly where you'd expect them, so ^_^ needs no mental rotation. That upright, left-to-right layout is why kaomoji spread so widely first on Japanese message boards like 2channel and then across the whole web.
Kaomoji are also distinct from emoji. Emoji (📱😂🎉) are single pictographic glyphs defined by the Unicode standard and rendered as colored images by your device. Kaomoji use no dedicated emoji codepoints at all — each face is assembled from ordinary letters, punctuation, and symbols, often pulling in Japanese kana, mathematical operators, and combining diacritical marks (the accents stacked on ಠ_ಠ or ╥﹏╥). Because they are plain text, kaomoji paste cleanly into usernames, code comments, terminals, and any field that rejects images or emoji.
We organize the collection into moods — happy, love, sad, angry, cute, animals, surprise, shrug, dance, table-flip, sleep, and greet — so you can jump straight to the feeling you want. Type a mood in the search box to filter, or tap a category chip. Every face is a static, pre-made string, so there is nothing to generate and nothing to configure: pick one, click, paste.
A few of these have become internet shorthand in their own right. The shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ signals casual indifference; the table flip (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ expresses comic frustration and even has a "putting the table back" counterpart ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ); the disapproval look ಠ_ಠ, the bear ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ, and the lenny-style faces all travel far beyond Japan. Because they carry tone that plain text can't, kaomoji are handy in chat, comments, commit messages, code, game names, and social media bios where you want personality without a picture.
Everything runs locally in your browser. No text is uploaded, no account is needed, and copying uses your browser's native clipboard. It works on desktop and mobile, and the kaomoji themselves are pure Unicode, so they travel intact to Discord, chat apps, social bios, documents, and code.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a kaomoji?
- A kaomoji is a Japanese emoticon built from ordinary text characters — like (◕‿◕) or ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. The name means "face characters" (kao = face, moji = character). Unlike Western emoticons such as :-), kaomoji are read upright without tilting your head.
- How is a kaomoji different from an emoji?
- An emoji (😂🎉) is a single pictographic glyph rendered as a colored image by your device. A kaomoji is plain text assembled from letters, punctuation, and symbols. Because kaomoji are pure text, they paste cleanly into usernames, code, and fields that block images or emoji.
- Is this kaomoji tool free and private?
- Yes. It's completely free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser. Copying uses your browser's native clipboard — nothing you do is uploaded to a server.
