Microsoft Word's readability score is the Flesch Reading Ease number paired with a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level reading — two formulas that score an English passage by counting its words, sentences and syllables — and a Mac user can get those same numbers two ways: by turning on Word for Mac's hidden readability panel, or by pasting the same passage into a browser-based checker that returns six published formulas at once instead of two. The browser path is faster, more private, and shows the raw word, sentence and syllable counts that every formula is built from, which matters because two readability tools that report different scores almost always disagree about counting rather than about the formula. Word for Mac only exposes the panel after a spelling and grammar pass on real prose and hides it behind several layers of menus, so the panel is easy to miss and the numbers it shows can be misleading on short or formulaic text. What "Microsoft Readability Score" Actually Measures
The phrase "Microsoft readability score" usually means the two numbers Word reports inside its readability statistics panel: a Flesch Reading Ease score on a 0-to-100 scale where higher means easier, and a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level that maps to a US school grade. Both formulas were originally published in 1948 and 1975 respectively, both take a passage and count words, sentences and syllables, and both reduce those counts to a single number through a fixed linear equation. Word surfaces those two scores because they were validated together, not because they are the only published readability formulas.
There are several other published formulas with different weightings. Gunning Fog counts long words. SMOG counts words with three or more syllables in a 30-sentence sample. Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index count characters instead of syllables, which makes them useful as a cross-check when the syllable estimate looks suspicious. Why Word for Mac's Built-In Stats Fall Short
Three things make Word for Mac's readability panel a frustrating default. First, it only reports two of the six published formulas, so a passage that scores "Grade 8" on Flesch-Kincaid could score "Grade 11" on Coleman-Liau in the same paragraph and you would never see the disagreement. Second, the panel is buried: it lives inside Review > Editor > Settings, only appears after the grammar checker has run on real prose, and is suppressed for documents Word considers too short or too list-heavy. A 150-word draft that needs an honest read is exactly the case where Word decides not to bother. Third, Word does not show you the word, sentence and syllable counts it used, so when a score seems wrong you have no way to audit which count is off.
On top of that, Word for Mac and the Word for Windows panel do not always agree on the same passage because Microsoft ships them with slightly different syllable counters, and the difference can move a Flesch Reading Ease number by several points. Turning On Word for Mac's Readability Statistics
If you do want Word for Mac's own numbers, the path is fixed but easy to miss. This is the dedicated Mac-side walkthrough.
- Open Word for Mac and load the document you want to score.
- Go to Word > Settings (or Preferences on older macOS builds), then choose Spelling & Grammar, or open Review > Editor > Settings.
- Under the "When correcting spelling and grammar in Word" heading, make sure "Show readability statistics" is checked. Close the settings pane.
- Back in your document, select Review > Spelling & Grammar. Word runs the grammar pass on real prose; lists, code blocks and very short passages may not trigger it.
- When the checker finishes, a small dialog appears showing "Words", "Characters", "Paragraphs", "Sentences", "Average words per sentence" and "Average syllables per word", followed by two readability numbers — Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level.
That dialog is the entire Microsoft readability output. It does not appear on iOS, the Word web app or on .docx files Word considers to be in a restricted mode, so the panel is genuinely Mac-only if you also need to do this in Word. Getting Six Readability Formulas on a Mac (Without Word)
This is the main how-to. The dedicated browser checker runs entirely in Safari or any other browser you have on macOS, returns six formulas at once, and shows the underlying counts every formula was built from.
- Open the Readability Score Checker in Safari, Chrome, Firefox or Arc — anything that can render JavaScript.
- Paste your English passage into the text box. Plain prose works best; the formulas were validated on running text and treat lists, code, tables or heavily numeric content as indicative only.
- Select Analyze. The page computes all six formulas in the same pass and reports them together.
- Read the Flesch Reading Ease band first, because it is the only formula on a "higher means easier" scale, then compare the grade-level scores underneath to see whether the formulas agree.
- Check the raw counts the page prints below the scores — words, sentences, syllables, letters, characters, three-syllable complex words and polysyllables. If two formulas disagree by more than a grade, the syllable or character count is the place to look.
Everything runs locally in your browser, so unpublished drafts, client material and any other text never leave your Mac — there is no upload, no account and no server-side storage to worry about.
How to Read the Six Scores Together
A single readability number is a thin signal; six numbers read together is a much thicker one. The Readability Score Checker prints Flesch Reading Ease plus five grade-level formulas: Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index. The five grade-level formulas disagree by design: Flesch-Kincaid and SMOG weigh syllables, Gunning Fog weighs the share of long words in a sentence, and Coleman-Liau and ARI weigh characters instead of syllables. When all five sit within about one grade of each other, you have a stable answer. When SMOG says 11 and Coleman-Liau says 7, the gap is almost always about counting, not about the formula.

That character-versus-syllable split is the most useful cross-check in the set. Syllable counting from English spelling is heuristic, so a passage full of vowel-adjacent proper nouns can produce a generous syllable estimate that pushes Flesch-Kincaid and SMOG upward while Coleman-Liau and ARI stay where they really are. A Worked Example With the Flesch Reading Ease Formula
To make the band labels meaningful, here is the Flesch Reading Ease formula applied to a tiny passage. The constants come from the Flesch 1948 paper as republished in the MSKTC plain-language tool document; the syllable weight is 84.6 rather than the 83.6 that an OCR scan occasionally surfaces.
Formula: Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words)
Passage: "The cat sat on the mat. The dog ran in the park."
Counts from the passage:
- Words: 12
- Sentences: 2
- Syllables: 12 (one per word)
Substituting:
- Words per sentence = 12 ÷ 2 = 6
- Syllables per word = 12 ÷ 12 = 1
- Flesch Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × 6 − 84.6 × 1
- = 206.835 − 6.09 − 84.6
- = 116.145
The score is about 116. That is above 100, which is allowed because the Flesch score is genuinely unbounded — very short, monosyllabic prose routinely clears 100. According to the MSKTC interpretation bands, anything from about 90 upward reads "very easy" at roughly fifth-grade level, so a passage this simple is doing exactly what the formula predicts. The same input on Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is computed as 0.39 × 6 + 11.8 × 1 − 15.59 = −1.45, which is the kind of negative grade the page prints plainly rather than rounding away. That negative grade is published arithmetic, not a bug. For a real article-length passage, paste the body into the checker and read the band label rather than trusting the bare number — and remember that the table of bands is a US-grade convention, not a verdict on whether a specific reader will follow your argument.
The Flesch Reading Ease Bands You Will See
The Readability Score Checker prints a band label next to the Flesch Reading Ease score using the plain-language convention published by the MSKTC. The bands are open-ended at both ends because the score can exceed 100 or drop below zero. The exact thresholds are:

The five grade-level formulas do not have a parallel "band" — the score itself is the grade. Reading them as "what year of US schooling this passage matches" is the convention, and it is rough by design.
Why the Underlying Counts Matter, and Where the Limits Are
A readability score is a short weighted sum of a few counts, and when two tools disagree on the same passage the disagreement almost always traces back to one of those counts. The page therefore prints the word count, sentence count, syllable count, letter count, character count, count of three-syllable complex words and count of polysyllables underneath the six scores. That collection of numbers is the actual answer; the score is a compressed summary of them.
Three concrete things to watch for. First, decimals, initials and a small abbreviation list are shielded from sentence detection so that a price or a title does not end a sentence early — if your sentence count looks low, check for stray periods in numbers or initials. Second, the syllable count is a rule-based estimate, not an authoritative spelling-to-syllable algorithm: it splits hyphenated words, handles consonant-plus-le endings, decides whether a final es or ed adds a syllable, drops a silent final e and counts the remaining vowel groups with a floor of one syllable per word. It is reliable on ordinary prose and under-counts some vowel-adjacent words. Third, the constants used by every formula were checked against primary sources — Kincaid et al. 1975 for Flesch-Kincaid and ARI, McLaughlin 1969 for SMOG and the MSKTC plain-language document for the Flesch Reading Ease bands — so when a number looks wrong the cause is almost always the counts, not the constants.
A few honest limits. SMOG was defined by McLaughlin for a sample of exactly thirty sentences, so below thirty the score is an extrapolation, and the square root in the SMOG formula amplifies counting noise on small samples. Coleman-Liau and ARI can return a negative grade on very short, very simple sentences, and that is the published arithmetic rather than an error. Grade-level formulas were validated on running prose, so results on lists, code, tables or heavily numeric text should be treated as indicative only. And none of these scores predict whether a specific reader will understand your text — they are good at telling you that a paragraph got denser after an edit, and poor at telling you whether your audience will follow it.
