Delete blank lines online by pasting plain text into the Remove Empty Lines tool, choosing which rows count as blank, and processing the text locally in your browser. The default whitespace-only setting removes ordinary empty lines and lines made entirely of recognized whitespace, including spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces, and other Unicode whitespace handled by the browser. Disable it when only zero-length lines should disappear; in that strict mode, even a line containing one space or tab remains. Every retained line keeps its content exactly: leading indentation, trailing spaces or tabs, repeated internal spaces, punctuation, letter case, and Unicode characters are not changed. The result is not reflowed, and the summary tells you how many input lines were removed and retained. Inputs may be as large as 1,000,000 UTF-16 code units, and completely empty input is rejected. The practical goal is to remove unwanted vertical gaps while checking that every meaningful line survives and that line-ending normalization is acceptable for the destination.

Blank-looking rows are not always truly empty: editors and spreadsheets can leave indentation on an otherwise invisible line. That is why whitespace-only removal is enabled by default. Use strict mode when those rows are meaningful source records or must remain visible for a later diagnostic pass. In either mode, every matching blank line is deleted rather than reduced to one blank separator.

Choose Which Lines Count as Blank

The mode controls one decision for each complete line. It does not change how the contents of retained lines are stored or displayed.

Mode Lines removed Lines retained Best fit
Whitespace-only, enabled by default Zero-length lines and lines that become empty after Unicode-aware trimming, including rows made of spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces, or other recognized whitespace. Every line containing non-whitespace content, with all of its characters unchanged. Visual cleanup when spaces or tabs left on blank-looking rows should also disappear.
Strict empty-only mode Only a line with zero code units. A line containing one space, one tab, or another whitespace character remains exactly as supplied. Source material where indentation-only rows or the empty-versus-whitespace distinction must remain visible.

The whitespace-only rule follows the browser’s Unicode-aware trimming behavior, covered in MDN’s String.trim documentation. Changing modes does not cause retained lines to be trimmed; it only changes which blank-line candidates pass the removal test.

Delete Blank Lines Online

  1. Paste the text. Open Remove Empty Lines and paste plain text containing the blank rows you want to remove. Prose, lists, configuration blocks, logs, code snippets, and exported values can all be processed as plain text. Do not submit a completely empty field because empty input is rejected before processing.
  2. Select the appropriate blank-line rule. Keep whitespace-only removal enabled to remove ordinary empty lines and visually blank rows containing spaces, tabs, or other recognized whitespace. Disable it when only true zero-length lines should be deleted and every whitespace-containing line must remain.
  3. Process and verify the result. Run the processing operation, then check the summary for the removed and retained line counts. Inspect the generated text before replacing the original, paying particular attention to indentation and blank runs near the beginning or end.

The filtering pass examines complete lines in their original order. It does not choose which empty gaps to keep, collapse several blanks into one, or insert a replacement separator. Changing either the input or the mode clears the previous output and counts immediately, so review the latest result after each change.

Preserve Content on Retained Lines

The tool’s alteration is limited to removing complete lines that meet the selected blank-line condition. Once a line is retained, its code units remain unchanged. Leading and trailing whitespace, indentation, tabs, repeated spaces inside the line, punctuation, letter case, and Unicode characters all survive exactly as pasted.

  • Horizontal whitespace inside a retained line is not collapsed.
  • Prose is not rewrapped into a different width or paragraph structure.
  • Duplicate lines are not removed, and records are not sorted.
  • Unicode is not normalized or converted into another representation.

The tool does not understand the structure of a programming language, CSV record, or JSON string. In particular, it does not parse CSV fields containing embedded newlines or protect newlines inside quoted JSON strings. It sees a plain browser string and its documented line boundaries, regardless of the surrounding format.

Blank lines can improve readability or carry meaning in source code, so inspect code before replacing it. For an editor-focused workflow, see Remove Empty Lines in Visual Studio Code Safely.

Handle Endings and Final Empty Lines

The input splitter recognizes CRLF, standalone CR, and LF line endings. CRLF counts as one boundary rather than two separate breaks. Generated output joins retained lines with LF, so a paste containing mixed source endings receives one consistent boundary style in the result. This changes line-ending style, but it does not trim or otherwise rewrite the content inside retained lines. For background on JavaScript string separation, refer to MDN’s String.split documentation.

A line ending at the end of the input creates a final empty line, which is removed in either mode. Leading empty lines and consecutive blank rows are processed individually and included in the removal count. If a trailing line break is semantically important to a particular format, confirm the generated result before using it.

Check Size, Empty Values, and Privacy

The input limit is 1,000,000 UTF-16 code units. Text at exactly that limit is accepted; one additional code unit causes a visible error and no partial output. The tool does not sample, slice, or silently truncate oversized text. Completely empty input is rejected, but whitespace-only input is valid. With whitespace-only removal enabled, that input produces an empty string and reports one removed line. Under strict empty-only removal, the whitespace-containing line remains.

Line filtering, counting, and output generation happen locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or sent to an external API. After validating a nonempty input within the size limit, the implementation splits its line endings, evaluates the selected predicate for each line, preserves retained lines in order, calculates the removal count, and joins the retained values with LF.

Confirm the Cleanup Fits the Format

Remove Empty Lines is suited to pasted tables, Markdown drafts, subtitle fragments, email lists, configuration blocks, logs, and code snippets with unwanted vertical gaps. It is not a document-layout editor or a format-aware parser. Rich text, Word documents, PDF pages, CSV records with embedded newlines, and quoted JSON strings can carry structural meaning that the tool cannot detect. Convert such material to an appropriate plain-text representation first, or use a format-aware editor when line structure extends beyond simple text boundaries.

Choose the operation based on the actual cleanup goal. If the task is to combine lines rather than delete blank ones, use the Line Break Remover. If the issue is repeated values rather than empty rows, use Remove Duplicate Lines. For blank-line removal itself, keep the appropriate mode selected, verify the removed and retained counts, and inspect the generated text before replacing source material.
