Basketball Scorekeeper simplifies the process by recording each 1-, 2-, or 3-point event for the correct team, logging team fouls separately, and making a mistaken entry reversible with Undo last event. It is designed for a focused two-team ledger rather than an official scoresheet, so the screen shows each team’s total, current period, and current period’s foul count in one readable layout. Start by naming the home and away teams. During play, tap the team and the point value that actually occurred instead of entering an unexplained total. When a foul is called, use Record team foul for that side; it never adds points. At the period break, choose Next period to retain the score and reset the displayed team-foul totals. If a tap was wrong, undo the last event and the complete prior game and daily summary return to their earlier state. The active record stays in the current browser, so no account or sign-in is required. You can leave the daily record on the device or export a PNG or CSV for a copy you choose to keep. This approach fits pickup games, school practice, community events, and driveway games where a simple, readable two-team record is enough.

What a simplified scoring workflow changes
A plain total tells you how many points are on the board, but not which scoring actions produced them. Basketball Scorekeeper keeps the point total and the kind of scoring event together. That lets the scorekeeper record what happened without adding points for a foul or reconstructing a three-point basket from an unexplained number.
| Game moment | Control to use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Made basket | +1, +2, or +3 for the scoring team | Adds the selected point value and retains the scoring-event type. |
| Team foul | Record team foul for the appropriate side | Increments that team’s current-period foul count without changing the score. |
| Period ends | Next period | Keeps the score, advances the period, and resets the displayed team-foul totals. |
| Wrong entry | Undo last event | Restores the full prior game and daily summary. |
The streamlined sequence is shorter: identify the team, choose the actual point value or foul action, advance the period only at the appropriate break, and undo an accidental tap instead of rebuilding the game afterward.
Use Basketball Scorekeeper for setup and live play
Open the tool in the browser on the device that will keep the record, then give the teams clear home and away names before play begins. The +1, +2, and +3 buttons represent a one-point free throw, a two-point-area goal, and a three-point-area goal. These values align with Article 16 of the FIBA Official Basketball Rules 2024.
- Set the two teams. Enter the home and away team names. The labels then anchor separate team totals, scoring-event records, and current-period foul displays.
- Record every made basket. Tap +1, +2, or +3 under the team that scored, using the value of the actual scoring action. The record keeps the event type as well as the total, so a later reader does not have to infer how the points were scored.
- Log a team foul separately. Choose Record team foul for the side that committed it. This increases only that team’s current-period foul count; it does not add points or create a player-foul entry.
- Close the period deliberately. When the period ends, select Next period. The game score remains, the period advances, and the displayed team-foul totals reset. After the fourth period, the display continues as numbered overtime periods, but the tool does not decide when an overtime is required; you make that choice.
- Correct a mistaken tap. Select Undo last event. Rather than subtracting a generic amount, it restores the complete prior game and daily summary, so the correct score and foul state return together.
- Finish and preserve the record. Use Start new game when another game is ready to begin; it clears the active scoreboard and current-period foul display while retaining saved daily history. Choose Export CSV or Export PNG when you need a portable copy, and no account is required for either export.
Keep periods and team fouls in the right place
Team fouls are a separate reminder rather than part of the scoring total. Recording a foul through its own control prevents a whistle from being mistaken for a basket. The displayed foul count belongs to the current period: choosing Next period resets both sides’ displayed team-foul totals while preserving the score. The saved daily event summary remains available after the transition.
This period-local design is useful for practices, pickup games, community events, and driveway games. It provides a current-period foul reminder without claiming that the tool can decide when a penalty applies. Competition rules vary across FIBA, NBA, WNBA, NCAA, youth, and pickup formats, and Basketball Scorekeeper does not resolve those differences.
If the game continues beyond regulation, advance only when another period is actually being played. The numbered overtime periods keep the sequence clear, and each new period begins with the displayed team-foul totals reset.
Recover from a wrong tap without rebuilding the game
The correction control restores the previous state rather than making you manually adjust totals. Undo last event is designed for a real sideline correction: it brings back the full prior game and daily summary. Undoing a foul therefore leaves the score untouched, while undoing a three-point event restores the correct total. For a focused walkthrough, see fixing a wrong Basketball Scorekeeper result.
Use Undo and Start new game for different jobs. Undo reverses the latest event inside the active record. Start new game clears the active scoreboard and current-period foul display but preserves saved daily history. Clear local history is a separate destructive action: it removes every locally saved record when you deliberately want a fresh browser state.
Keep daily history private and export it when useful
Every score and foul is saved in a small private daily summary for the browser’s local calendar date. The daily row counts the points recorded on that date. CSV export uses one row per local date and includes separate home points, away points, home fouls, and away fouls, so a later reader can distinguish the totals without guessing what they represent.
PNG export creates a 1080 by 1350 visual record containing a total and recent days. It intentionally leaves out team names and a web address to reduce unnecessary context when the file is shared. You decide whether to keep either portable copy.
Team names, the active game, and daily history stay only in the current browser under the tool’s local storage key. There is no account, upload, remote sports database, or server-side conversion in the export path. Both downloads are generated locally with native browser Blob and canvas APIs.
Local storage also has clear limits. A different device starts empty, clearing site data removes the record, and an unavailable browser storage area is disclosed rather than being presented as a hidden backup. Export the history before clearing browser data if you need to keep it.
Set clear limits for the scorekeeping job
Basketball Scorekeeper is focused on a standard two-team point ledger, a visible period, and a team-foul reminder. Several features associated with more comprehensive basketball systems are intentionally outside its scope.
| What the tool provides | What the tool does not provide |
|---|---|
| Separate 1-, 2-, and 3-point events and team totals | Game clock or shot clock |
| Current period and numbered overtime periods | Possession tracking |
| Period-local team-foul count | Player roster or player-foul ledger |
| Undo last event | Official adjudication, penalty, or substitution decisions |
| Private daily history with PNG and CSV exports | A rules engine for different competition formats |
If an official game record is required, use the scoring method designated by that competition. For a pickup game, practice, or community event where a one-, two-, and three-point ledger with period information and team-foul reminders is enough, the narrow design serves a different, simpler purpose.
The streamlined routine is straightforward: label the teams, record each point type or foul, advance the period only when needed, undo mistakes, and export a copy before clearing browser data.
