PDF Page Counter

Count pages and group the exact page-box dimensions in one local PDF without uploading or modifying the document.

Privacy: your files never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser.

How to use

  1. 1.Choose a non-empty PDF no larger than 25 MiB.
  2. 2.Wait for the browser to read the document page tree.
  3. 3.Review the total page count and each grouped page-box dimension.

About PDF Page Counter

PDF Page Counter reads one local document and reports how many pages it contains. Choose a PDF up to 25 MiB and the result appears after the browser finishes loading its page tree. The tool also groups identical page-box dimensions, so a file with two 612 by 792 point pages and one 400 by 500 point page reports both sizes and their counts. The file is processed inside the current tab and is never uploaded to Lizely.

The page total comes directly from the PDF document structure exposed by the existing PDF library. It is not estimated from file size, thumbnail count, printed sheet count, or visible page-number labels. A document can display page numbers that start later, repeat, or use Roman numerals, but those labels do not change the structural page count reported here. This distinction makes the result useful for upload checks, print estimates, splitting plans, and document QA.

For every page, the tool reads the width and height of its current page box in PDF points. Values are rounded only for readable display to at most two decimal places, then equal display sizes are grouped in first-seen order. The tool does not label those boxes as A4, Letter, or another paper standard, because that would require orientation and tolerance decisions. It simply reports the dimensions present in the file.

Mixed-size PDFs are handled without assuming the first page represents all later pages. This helps identify a cover with a different box, a scanned insert, a foldout, or an accidental page-size change. Rotation metadata can affect how a viewer presents a page, while the reported width and height remain the page-box values returned by the document library. The tool does not rewrite rotation or normalize any page.

Empty files, non-PDF selections, files above 25 MiB, encrypted documents, damaged cross-reference data, and unsupported PDFs produce a visible error. Password protection is not bypassed. A job identifier prevents an older slow read from replacing a newer selection. Selecting another file clears the previous result before processing begins, so the displayed count always belongs to the named current file.

The operation is strictly read-only. It does not add metadata, repair a PDF, save a new copy, extract text, render thumbnails, count annotations, detect blank pages, count physical duplex sheets, or infer printing cost. No download is created because the source is not changed. The result exists only in the page until another file is chosen or the tab closes.

The displayed dimensions use PDF points, where the file defines its geometry rather than the monitor or printer. They are not pixel dimensions and do not reveal scan resolution or image quality. A large point size can contain low-resolution imagery, and a small page can contain vector artwork that scales cleanly. Treat the size inventory as document geometry, not as a quality score.

Use PDF Page Counter when the required answer is the structural number of pages and a compact page-size inventory. For page reordering, deletion, N-up layout, splitting, or resizing, use the dedicated PDF tools linked below. Those tools create new files, while this counter remains a fast private inspection step that does not touch the original bytes.

Methodology & sources

Validate one bounded PDF, load it without metadata updates, read the structural page array, report its exact length, obtain every page box, round dimensions only for display, group equal displayed sizes in first-seen order, and guard stale asynchronous reads.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool count printed sheets or PDF pages?
It counts structural PDF pages. Duplex print settings and visible page-number labels do not change that total.
Why are several page sizes listed?
The PDF contains pages with different page-box dimensions; equal sizes are grouped and counted separately.
Does it change or save my PDF?
No. The tool is read-only and creates no modified document.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. File loading, page counting, and size grouping run locally in the browser.
