You can edit PDF metadata on an iPhone in a browser with PDF Metadata Editor, which updates standard PDF document information locally without uploading the file. On an iPhone, the practical route is to open the editor in your browser, choose a PDF from the device, review the entries it detects, and save a separately named copy. The tool can update the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date, and modification date. It reads and writes the document information stored inside the PDF; it does not redraw a cover page, change visible headings, rename the file, or alter page artwork. The original file remains unchanged, so you can compare the downloaded version before sharing it. This local browser workflow is useful when a viewer needs a clearer title, a delivery copy needs a corrected author field, or an internal archive needs better keywords. Because PDF viewers expose different fields, verify the new copy in the viewer or system that matters to your recipient.

What You Can Change on iPhone

PDF Metadata Editor focuses on standard document-information entries. These fields help applications identify and organize a PDF, but they remain separate from the visible page content and the filename.

PDF field What you can set Important boundary
Title A clearer or corrected document title Does not replace a cover-page heading or change the filename
Author The stored author label Does not prove authorship or create a signature
Subject A description of the document's topic Different viewers may label or display it differently
Keywords A comma-separated set of search terms Stored as document information, not printed on the page
Creator The listed creator label Does not certify authorship or sign the document
Producer The listed producer value Some viewers and archive systems do not display it
Creation and modification dates Valid document dates Enter real calendar dates in YYYY-MM-DD format

Use a predictable title and creator convention when cleaning several reports or documents. It makes downloaded files easier to recognize without changing any of their pages.

Edit PDF Metadata on iPhone

The complete iPhone workflow takes place through the browser and the device's file picker. Keep the original available so you can compare it with the edited download.

  1. Open the metadata editor in your iPhone browser. Use the PDF Metadata Editor link above, and make sure the PDF you want to edit is stored in a location available to the device picker.
  2. Choose the PDF file. Select one PDF from your device and allow the tool to read it. The selected file is processed in the browser rather than sent to a server.
  3. Review the detected document information. Check the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date, and modification date shown by the tool. A missing entry does not mean the same field will be displayed by every PDF viewer.
  4. Edit the entries you need. Update the text fields directly. Enter keywords as one comma-separated value. For either supported date, use YYYY-MM-DD and provide a real calendar date, including a valid leap-year date when applicable.
  5. Decide how to handle empty fields. An empty title, author, subject, keywords, creator, or producer box is deliberately saved as an empty value. A blank creation or modification date behaves differently: it leaves the source date unchanged.
  6. Save the metadata and download the separate PDF. The tool creates a separately named copy rather than overwriting the source file. Retain both versions while you check the result.
  7. Open the downloaded copy in your preferred viewer. Confirm the fields that matter to you, especially when the file will be delivered to another person or imported into an archive system.

If the iPhone cannot read the document, do not assume the metadata editor can repair it. Protected, damaged, or malformed files may fail during loading, and the editor does not bypass PDF protection.

Rules That Affect the Saved PDF

The editor writes selected standard information entries while leaving the original PDF untouched. Its behavior is intentionally narrow, so several rules determine what an empty box or saved change actually means.

  • Empty text fields are removable values. If you clear the title, author, subject, keywords, creator, or producer before saving, the downloaded copy receives an empty value for that field.
  • Empty dates are not removal commands. Leaving a date blank preserves the date already stored in the source document. This workflow does not treat an empty date box as a dependable way to remove a PDF date entry.
  • Keywords keep their entered form. Separate terms with commas, and the tool preserves that comma-separated value in the saved document-information entry.
  • Unusual files are not forced open. PDFs with malformed metadata, unusual vendor extensions, password protection, or damage may not load. The tool rejects protected or unreadable files safely and does not promise to repair damaged documents or normalize every vendor-specific field.

Saving any changed PDF can invalidate an existing digital signature, even though the visible page artwork remains unchanged. Keep the original signed file and use a signature-aware workflow whenever signature validity is important.

Metadata editing is also not a redaction process. The tool does not remove hidden content, page content, annotations, or attachments. It leaves page artwork, form fields, bookmarks, links, and passwords alone. Use a dedicated redaction workflow when confidential material must be removed.

Verify the Copy in the Destination Viewer

A successful download is only the first check. Review the edited PDF in the application that will actually display or store it.

  • Keep the original and the downloaded copy separate for comparison.
  • Check only the fields relevant to your workflow, such as title, author, or dates.
  • Remember that one viewer may show the title while ignoring producer information.
  • Test an archive workflow separately because it may read keywords without displaying creator or producer values.
  • Review date changes carefully when a recipient relies on document timestamps.

Some viewers display only a subset of PDF metadata and may use different labels for the same information. A field's absence from one viewer does not establish that it is absent from every application. Confirm the entries in the destination viewer before replacing an earlier copy or sharing the document.

Choose Another Workflow for Other PDF Changes

Metadata is only one part of a PDF. Use the correct operation when your actual requirement affects page content, security, or the file name.

Your actual task Result from the metadata editor What to use instead
Change only the visible filename The filename remains unchanged Rename the file in iOS
Replace a cover title or visible heading Page content remains unchanged An appropriate PDF authoring or page-editing workflow
Remove confidential page content, annotations, or attachments No redaction is performed A dedicated redaction workflow
Rotate, merge, number, or watermark pages Page artwork is left alone The corresponding task-specific PDF tool
Make form fields permanent or change links, bookmarks, or passwords Those structures are left alone A workflow designed for the selected feature
Preserve an existing digital signature A changed save may invalidate it A signature-aware document workflow

For a metadata-only correction on iPhone, keep the source PDF, update only entries you can verify, download the new copy, and inspect that copy in its intended destination.
