What Booklet Imposition Does to Your Pages
The page order used in a folded booklet is not intuitive. Each landscape sheet holds two source pages, one on the left panel and one on the right panel. When you fold the stack of printed sheets in half and staple through the centre, the panels on the outside of the stack become the first and last pages of the finished booklet, while the panels on the inside become the middle pages. The imposition logic has to anticipate that folding step, which is why pages are arranged in pairs that look out of sequence at first glance.
For a four-page source, the first sheet has page 4 on the left panel and page 1 on the right panel. Flip that sheet over and you see page 2 on the left and page 3 on the right. After folding, page 1 lands on the front cover, page 4 lands on the back cover, and pages 2 and 3 form the inside spread. An eight-page source uses two sheets: the first sheet carries pages 8 and 1 on the front with pages 2 and 7 on the back, and the second sheet carries pages 6 and 3 on the front with pages 4 and 5 on the back. Once folded, the pages read 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 in order. This ordering is the core of booklet imposition, and it is the part that makes a two-up folded booklet actually readable.
Why Blank Panels Appear in the Output
A folded booklet is always built from sheets that have four panels each: two on the front and two on the back. If your source PDF has a page count that is not already a multiple of four, the imposition cannot land on a clean fold without extra panels. The Booklet PDF tool rounds the source page count up to the next multiple of four and inserts blank panels at the end of the imposed output where the physical sheet requires them. Those blanks are deliberate: they keep the fold aligned and prevent the last printed page from appearing in the wrong place after stapling.

A five-page handout is the most common case where padding shows up. The output has two sheets, the first of which carries page 1 on the right of the front and page 2 on the left of the back, with the front-left panel blank. The second sheet carries page 3 on the right of the front, then pages 4 and 5 on the back. After folding, the blank panels sit at the back of the booklet and do not interfere with reading order. Keep your source file so you can compare the imposed output against it and rerun the job with a different paper size or margin if the first result needs adjustment.
How to Convert a PDF Into a Booklet
- Open the Booklet PDF tool in your browser and choose the PDF you want to fold into a booklet. The file is read locally; nothing is uploaded.
- Select A4 landscape or US Letter landscape as the output sheet size. Pick the size that matches the paper loaded in your printer.
- Set a small panel margin so the printed content does not sit right on the fold or the cut edge. A few millimetres is usually enough.
- Create the booklet. The tool rounds your page count up to a multiple of four, inserts blank panels where needed, and arranges each source page onto one half of a landscape sheet in fold order.
- Download the imposed PDF when processing finishes. The download is a new file; your original is unchanged.
- Open the downloaded PDF in your normal PDF reader, enable double-sided printing, and print one sheet first. Fold it along the centre line and confirm that the pages read in the right order.

Choosing Paper Size and Panel Margin
A4 and US Letter are the two landscape sheet sizes the tool supports. Pick the size that matches the paper you have loaded; mixing paper sizes between the imposition and the printer will shift the fold position and can clip content at the edges. A4 landscape is 297 by 210 mm; US Letter landscape is 279 by 216 mm. Both are common office paper sizes and both work with standard home and office printers.
The panel margin is the white space left around each source page on its half of the landscape sheet. A small margin (a few millimetres) keeps the printed content away from the fold and the outer edge, which is where paper handling tends to be roughest. If you set the margin to zero, a page with content that runs to its edge may end up partially hidden inside the fold or under the staple. If you set the margin too large, small source pages will float in the centre of each panel with more whitespace than you probably want. Each source page is fitted independently into its panel and shrunk when necessary to fit, but it is not enlarged when it is smaller than the panel, so mixed document sizes will show different amounts of surrounding whitespace.
Printing and Binding the Booklet
Double-sided printing is what makes a folded booklet work. Each landscape sheet carries two source pages on the front and two on the back, so a single sheet, once folded, gives you four readable pages. Your PDF reader's print dialog will have a double-sided or duplex option; select it and then use the print preview to choose the binding edge. Short-edge binding puts the flip on the short side of the landscape sheet, which is the side you fold. Long-edge binding puts the flip on the long side, which produces a booklet that opens sideways instead of folding in half. The tool cannot change your printer driver's binding setting — that varies by device and paper feed direction — so always use the preview to confirm the orientation before you print.
Print one sheet first. Fold it along the centre line, check that page 1 is on the front cover and the last page is on the back cover, and confirm that the inside pages read in order. If the test sheet is correct, print the rest of the document, stack the sheets in the same face-up order, fold the stack once, and staple through the centre. One staple in the middle is enough for a thin booklet; thicker stacks benefit from two staples spaced an inch or two apart.
That step of printing a single test sheet is the most important habit to build around booklet imposition. A wrong binding edge or an incorrect page order is invisible until you fold the first sheet, and reprinting a full run of a long document wastes paper and ink. The cost of one extra sheet is trivial compared with the cost of a misprinted batch.
Mixed Page Sizes and Stored Rotation
PDFs can carry pages of different sizes, and individual pages can store a rotation of 90 or 270 degrees that the viewer applies on top of the page geometry. The Booklet PDF tool detects both: each source page is fitted independently into its panel, so a tall portrait page and a short landscape page from the same document will both appear at the correct orientation, and any stored rotation is respected in the output. Pages are shrunk when needed to fit their panel, but they are not enlarged when they are smaller than the panel.
Because each panel is fitted independently, pages with different proportions can end up with different amounts of surrounding whitespace. This is normal for mixed-size documents and is the trade-off for keeping every page readable and undistorted. If your document uses stored rotation, open the downloaded booklet in your PDF reader and inspect a sample page before printing the full run. Stored rotation can occasionally look different from what a viewer displays, and a one-sheet test print is the cheapest way to catch a mismatch.
If a page in your source document carries interactive form fields, comments, links, or other editable page objects, those objects are not preserved as live controls in the imposed output. The tool produces a fresh imposed PDF focused on page content; it does not carry interactive layers forward. Password-protected or unreadable PDFs are rejected before processing begins.
