It divides one by the other and reports the result as the Effective PPI in the Links panel and in the Info panel when the image is selected. InDesign does not edit this metadata when you transform a picture frame, change an object's width, or move an image between documents.   • Height: 2400 px ÷ 8 in = 300 DPI

JPEG and PNG Store DPI Differently

One practical consequence of this difference: a PNG read back through a metadata viewer may report a DPI like 299.9996 or 300.0005 instead of the integer you entered. This is a storage precision limit tied to the integer pixels-per-metre field, not a change in the actual image pixels. JPEG readbacks, by contrast, round-trip exactly because JFIF uses dots per inch as its native unit.

Verifying the New DPI Once the Image Is Placed

After you download the updated file from the Image DPI Changer and place it into your InDesign document, open the Links panel and select the placed image.
