About YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

YouTube Thumbnail Downloader accepts a YouTube video URL or an exact 11-character video ID and produces links to five known thumbnail variants hosted by YouTube. It understands regular watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts URLs, embed URLs, mobile YouTube links, and live-video URLs. Parsing runs locally and requires no YouTube API key, account, or Lizely server request.

The result lists maximum resolution, standard, high, medium, and default variants. YouTube documents the corresponding video thumbnail categories as maxres, standard, high, medium, and default, commonly associated with 1280 × 720, 640 × 480, 480 × 360, 320 × 180, and 120 × 90 images. The page labels maximum and standard sizes as optional because YouTube does not expose every size for every video.

Each successful card shows the image returned by YouTube and an Open image link. If an optional image is unavailable, the card says so instead of pretending that a low-resolution placeholder is the requested size. Open the image in a new tab and use the browser's save-image command when you have the right to reuse it. The files remain on YouTube's image host and are not proxied, copied, or stored by Lizely.

URL parsing uses an exact host allowlist. It accepts youtube.com and its subdomains plus youtu.be, then extracts only an 11-character ID containing ASCII letters, digits, underscore, or hyphen. Lookalike hosts such as youtube.com.example.test, unsupported paths, missing IDs, malformed URLs, and injected filenames are rejected. Thumbnail filenames are selected from a fixed allowlist, so input cannot turn the image URL into an arbitrary path.

The tool does not download private videos, bypass permissions, retrieve deleted content, remove watermarks, upscale images, or guarantee that every listed variant exists. It also does not call the quota-bearing YouTube Data API, verify ownership, or inspect a video's license. Availability can change when the video owner replaces a thumbnail, restricts a video, or removes it.

Thumbnails may be protected by copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or platform rules. Use them only when you own the video, have permission, or have determined that your use is lawful. Opening an image is a technical convenience, not a grant of reuse rights or legal advice.

Trim input, accept a bare ID only when it matches the exact 11-character YouTube alphabet, otherwise parse it as a URL and allow only youtube.com subdomains or youtu.be. Extract IDs from watch, shorts, embed, live, or short-link shapes. Build HTTPS i.ytimg.com paths from five allowlisted filenames corresponding to YouTube's documented default, medium, high, standard, and maxres thumbnail categories. Mark standard and maxres optional and hide links whose image load fails.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use my YouTube API quota?
No. The tool parses the video ID locally and opens known YouTube-hosted thumbnail URLs without an API key.
Why are maximum or standard thumbnails unavailable?
YouTube exposes those larger variants only for some videos. The tool reports a failed optional image instead of substituting a different size.
Can it access private or deleted videos?
No. It can only open thumbnail resources that YouTube makes publicly reachable.
May I reuse any thumbnail I find?
Not automatically. Copyright and other rights still apply, so use thumbnails only when you own them or have a valid permission or legal basis.
