Reading the grid first: 25 cells, 6 blocks, 19 letters
Before you read a single clue, map the grid itself. This crossword is a single 5 by 5 board in which the first, third, and fifth rows have black squares at both ends, while the second and fourth rows are fully open. That fixed layout produces exactly 25 cells in total, six of them black and nineteen white, and a clue panel split into an Across section and a Down section. Seven clue numbers appear on the board, but there are eight distinct entries because clue number 1 begins both an Across word and a Down word at the same starting cell.

Where the Down entries carry the most information

The three-letter Across entries (clues 1, 5, and 7) are short, but their central letter is locked by a Down answer the moment that Down is filled in. A three-letter word with a known middle letter is essentially a one-letter deduction, so the short Across entries fall quickly once the Down skeleton is in place. Advanced players treat the Downs as the engine of the solve and the Across entries as the verification step that catches any mismatched letter they typed into a vertical word.
Run a structured solve on this crossword
- Read all three Down clues and all five Across clues in that order, but do not type anything yet. Note each clue's sense and the length shown in parentheses next to the clue number.
- Pick the Down clue you are most confident about, tap its number in the clue panel to position the cursor at its first white cell, and type your chosen word using the on-screen alphabet or your physical keyboard. Each letter advances automatically to the next white cell in row-major order.
- Move to the second Down clue and repeat. It is a separate entry, so its cells remain empty until you enter them.
- Fill the third Down entry the same way. After this step all three vertical words are complete and fifteen of the nineteen white cells contain letters that two directions agree on.
- Switch to the three short Across entries (clues 1, 5, and 7). Their middle letters are pinned by your Downs, so each three-letter word reduces to a one-letter deduction from the clue sense.
- Move to the two five-letter Across entries (clues 4 and 6). Three of their five letters are already locked by the Downs. Use the clue sense to identify the two outer letters, the only cells on the board that no Down answer constrains.
- Press Check, or hit Enter on a physical keyboard. If any white cell is still empty, the checker reports the grid is incomplete and records no mistake. If every cell is filled, the checker compares your full grid against the eight dictionary-backed answers and either awards 1,000 points or records a wrong-grid fingerprint.
Treat the two-error policy as a feature, not a fear
The game grants two mistakes per run, and the way it counts them rewards careful correction rather than frantic retrying. Each fully populated wrong grid is fingerprinted, so resubmitting the exact same wrong arrangement costs nothing additional. Only a different fully populated wrong grid counts as the second mistake, which then deadlocks the run until you Restart.
This means a Check you submit mid-puzzle carries very low risk. If the grid is incomplete, nothing is recorded against you. If the grid is full and correct, you score 1,000 immediately. If the grid is full and wrong, you still have one mistake in reserve, you can study the rejected letters, fix the offending crossings, and submit again. The only irreversible loss is a second distinct wrong grid.
An advanced player uses the policy to audit their work in stages. Type the three Downs first and check after step four, even though the Across entries are still incomplete, just to confirm the vertical skeleton. If the incomplete check reports nothing wrong, proceed to the Across entries. If you ever fill the entire grid and submit a wrong full grid, do not panic and retype randomly; study the 15 crossings for the letter that disagrees with the clue, change it, and resubmit. The fingerprint guard means a slow, deliberate second attempt is always safer than a rapid re-roll of the same grid.
Controls that support deliberate play
The interface is built for two input styles, and both can support an advanced, careful workflow. On a touchscreen, tap any clue number in the Across or Down panel to position the cursor at that clue's first white cell, then tap letters on the 26-button on-screen keyboard. The cursor advances one white cell at a time in row-major order and skips black cells, so you can keep your eyes on the clue text rather than on the board. The Erase control removes the selected letter; with an empty selection it backsteps one cell to the previous white cell.
On a physical keyboard, Arrow keys move one square up, down, left, or right whenever the destination is a white cell, and movement stops at the grid boundary or at any black cell. Letter keys enter uppercase answers and advance through the cells automatically. Backspace and Delete erase using the same deterministic rule as the on-screen Erase control. Enter submits the grid to the checker. A held key is intentionally ignored after the first keydown, so a finger resting on the keyboard cannot race through cells or accidentally fire two checks in a row.
On a physical keyboard, the shared double-Escape gesture opens a spreadsheet-style boss screen, and a second double Escape returns to the crossword. Because both terminal states freeze the board, you do not need to worry about returning from the boss screen and accidentally submitting a half-finished grid: every check still requires the full 19-cell population to count, so an empty square blocks the score no matter how quickly you press Enter.
Restart, scoring, and what a clean run looks like
A correct grid awards exactly 1,000 points. The score is independent of speed, device, the number of erases you used, the order in which you tackled the clues, and whether you typed letters with a finger or a keyboard. This is a fixed-vocabulary puzzle rather than an intelligence test, so timing is intentionally excluded from the score; with only eight answers, repeated play becomes easier through memory and the route to 1,000 is meant to be repeatable.
Best score is kept in local browser storage through the shared GameShell, while the puzzle letters themselves are not uploaded. There is no account, no network request during play, no random generator, no audio, no canvas, and no server computation. Everything runs locally in a small React client game and the layout is designed to work on a 390-pixel mobile viewport without horizontal scrolling, with the letter pad widening to thirteen columns on wider screens.
Restart rebuilds the exact initial board: six black squares restored, all 19 white squares empty, cursor on 1 Across, no stored wrong-grid fingerprints, zero mistakes, and zero score. Both terminal outcomes freeze the grid, so once you reach 1,000 or your second distinct wrong grid, no further selection, letter input, erasing, Arrow movement, or checking modifies the puzzle. That freeze is what makes the 1,000-point score auditable: nothing after the terminal event can retroactively change what was achieved.
