Social Security COLA Calculator

Estimate a monthly Social Security amount with nine official historical COLA rates or a clearly separated projected 2027 scenario, using transparent SSA-style whole-dollar truncation.

How to use

  1. 1.Enter a current monthly amount from $1.00 through $100,000.00, using at most two decimal places.
  2. 2.Choose an official 2018–2026 payment-year COLA or select the clearly labelled 2027 projected scenario and enter a hypothetical rate.
  3. 3.Read the raw multiplication, whole-dollar truncated estimate, status label, and nearby limitations before comparing the figure with an official SSA notice.

About Social Security COLA Calculator

Social Security COLA Calculator applies one selected cost-of-living adjustment rate to a monthly amount that you enter. The arithmetic is deliberately narrow and visible: monthly benefit multiplied by one plus the COLA percentage. The result card shows the untruncated product, then displays a whole-dollar estimate by dropping the fractional dollar. You can select an official historical payment-year rate from 2018 through 2026 or enter your own projected rate for a 2027 scenario. The calculation runs entirely in the current browser tab and sends no benefit amount to Lizely, SSA, BLS, or another service.

The historical selector uses the year in which the adjusted benefit is paid. That convention matters. SSA's public history describes January 2025 as a 2.5 percent COLA, January 2024 as 3.2 percent, and January 2023 as 8.7 percent. The OACT historical series labels those same adjustments by the preceding December effective year. The tool stores both fields so a rate cannot silently move by one year. Nine literal rates covering benefit years 2018 through 2026 are frozen in the product and in an independent test fixture.

SSA is the primary source for every official rate. BLS provides an independent federal cross-check through the non-seasonally-adjusted U.S. city average all-items CPI-W series CWUR0000SA0. For each frozen row, the July, August, and September values form a third-quarter average. Applying SSA's published percentage formula and nearest-one-tenth-percent rule reproduces the official rate value. This cross-check does not mean BLS sets Social Security policy; BLS publishes the CPI-W data, while SSA applies the statutory COLA rules.

A simple monthly-payment multiplication is not SSA's complete individual benefit calculation. SSA applies the COLA to a person's primary insurance amount, truncates at defined stages, applies early- or delayed-retirement factors, subtracts relevant offsets or Medicare premiums, and truncates the final monthly benefit to the next lower dollar. A current payment entered here may already reflect several of those factors. The calculator therefore calls every output an estimate and never describes it as an award, notice, eligibility decision, guaranteed check, exact payment, or official SSA calculation.

The displayed estimate follows the final whole-dollar boundary documented by SSA: it truncates down to the next lower whole dollar rather than rounding to the nearest dollar. For example, a monthly input of $2,015.00 with a 2.8 percent rate produces a raw product of $2,071.42 and a displayed estimate of $2,071. The tool uses bounded integer cents and tenths-of-a-percentage-point arithmetic before formatting. It rejects exponent notation, grouping commas, currency symbols, negative values, more than two amount decimals, more than one rate decimal, monthly amounts above $100,000, and projected rates above 20.0 percent.

The 2027 path is isolated from official history. As checked on August 11, 2026, SSA says the next COLA will be announced in October 2026. No official 2027 rate is stored. Choosing the 2027 scenario exposes a user-entered field and labels the field, rate, and result projected and not official. Updating that status after an SSA announcement requires a new source review, new literal evidence, and a product release; a projection cannot be silently relabelled as fact.

Estimate only — not an official SSA benefit calculation or financial advice. The result does not determine Social Security eligibility, Supplemental Security Income, claiming age, taxes, Medicare premiums, offsets, family benefits, disability status, or the amount shown in an official notice. Actual payments can differ even when the selected historical percentage is correct. Use the result to inspect a transparent rate scenario, then check an official COLA notice or my Social Security account for an individual amount.

No runtime API, account, upload, or paid data source is involved. The source links below let a reviewer inspect the official history, calculation method, application sequence, rounding policy, CPI-W series, and next-announcement timing. Because a future status can change, the visible 2027 warning includes its as-of date. This calculator is a bounded information tool, not a replacement for SSA, a financial professional, or current program guidance.

Methodology & sources

Freeze nine SSA official COLA literals under explicit January payment-year labels and independently reproduce each from literal BLS CPI-W third-quarter averages. Parse a monthly amount from $1.00 through $100,000.00 into integer cents and a rate into tenths of a percentage point. Compute monthly × (1 + rate), expose the raw product, and truncate the display down to the next whole dollar. Keep official historical records structurally separate from the user-entered 2027 projected scenario. Never promote 2027 to official without a fresh evidence review, and never describe the simplified result as an eligibility or award determination.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an official Social Security benefit calculation?
No. It is a simplified estimate that multiplies the monthly amount entered by one plus the selected rate and truncates the display to a whole dollar. SSA starts from PIA and can apply age factors, Medicare premiums, offsets, and other rules.
Has SSA announced the 2027 COLA?
No, not as of August 11, 2026. SSA says the next COLA will be announced in October 2026. Any 2027 rate entered here is a projected user scenario, not an official figure.
Why is the result truncated instead of rounded to the nearest dollar?
SSA documents a next-lower-dollar rule for the final monthly benefit. The calculator shows the raw multiplication first, then drops the fractional dollar for an SSA-style displayed estimate without claiming to reproduce the full SSA sequence.
