Why a Single Wall Uses the Drop Method
Rolls of wallpaper are not really sheets you tile across a wall. They are long strips that get cut to length, hung vertically, and matched side by side. Each strip is called a drop, and every drop must be wide enough to cover its slice of the wall and long enough to run from top to bottom with enough trim to make the ends square. As soon as a drop reaches a corner, it stops; the next wall needs its own full-width starting drop. The drop method also exposes pattern repeat. A free-match paper can be cut at any height, so the adjusted drop equals the wall height plus your trim allowance. The wasted length between the actual height and the rounded-up panel is alignment waste, not extra coverage. Two rolls with identical square area can therefore require different quantities depending on how their repeats fall against the wall.
Information to Gather Before You Measure
Before you start, you need five sets of numbers from the wall and the roll. Each one matters, and the calculator exposes them as separate inputs so you can see what is feeding the result.
For the wall itself:
- Wall width. Measure across the wall at its widest point, including any doors and windows as part of that width. Doors and windows are not subtracted in this estimator (the next section explains why). If you are wallpapering more than one wall of the same height and same product, list each width separately with commas.
- Wall height. Use the tallest measurement you take, since one short drop cannot substitute for a long one. Measure at several points because ceilings and floors are rarely perfectly level.

- Pick the unit. Choose centimetres or inches at the top. All length fields below accept that unit; switching later converts the existing numbers rather than relabelling them.
- Enter the wall width. Type the width of the single wall you are papering. If you are also papering other walls of the same height with the same product, add those widths separated by commas. Keep doors and windows inside each width.
- Enter the tallest wall height. Use the largest measurement you took across the wall. This becomes the base height before the trim allowance is added.
- Add a top-and-bottom trim allowance. Enter the extra length you want to leave at both ends as a single number. The calculator adds this to the wall height and calls the sum the base drop.
- Enter the roll width and roll length from the product label. Use the printed numbers exactly; do not estimate.

Worked example (free match). Suppose you are papering a single wall that is 300 cm wide and 250 cm tall with a free-match paper on a 53 cm by 1005 cm Euro roll, and you want 5 cm of trim at the top and bottom.
Base drop = wall height + trim allowance = 250 cm + 5 cm = 255 cm. Because the pattern repeat is 0, the adjusted drop equals the base drop, so adjusted drop = 255 cm.
Drops needed = ceil(wall width ÷ roll width) = ceil(300 ÷ 53) = ceil(5.66) = 6 drops.
Drops per roll = floor(roll length ÷ adjusted drop) = floor(1005 ÷ 255) = floor(3.94) = 3 drops.

Doors, Windows, and the Wall Width You Enter
In this estimator, doors and windows stay inside the wall width. The reason is physical, not arithmetic. Wallpaper is still cut into pieces that go above and below each opening, and a repeating pattern must continue across the seam even when an opening interrupts the run. An offcut saved from one side of a window may have a different pattern position than the strip you need on the other side, and the leftover may be too short to cover a full-height section elsewhere. A conservative takeoff therefore counts the full wall width and lets the spare-roll decision absorb the small saving if you actually recover material.
If an opening takes up nearly the entire height of the wall, an experienced professional takeoff may recover more material than this general estimator promises, because the cut list can be planned around the opening instead of running straight drops across it. In that situation, follow the supplier or installer plan rather than the rounded-up roll count.

If any of the walls you want to paper have a different height, a different product, or a different roll size, calculate them separately rather than combining them into a single estimate. The tool assumes one consistent maximum wall height and one roll specification.
When This Estimator Is Not the Right Tool
The Wallpaper Calculator is a transparent general estimator. It deliberately stops short of a few cases where the cutting sequence is different.
- Half-drop, offset, alternating, or reverse-hung matches. These require either alternating strip positions or an effective repeat supplied by the manufacturer. The calculator does not accept a half-repeat; follow the roll label, the manufacturer calculator, or an installer-prepared cutting plan instead.
- Murals and pre-cut panels. Panels have fixed widths that ignore the roll width, so the count comes from panel count rather than drops per roll.
- Custom or non-standard repeats. If the product label uses a special match instruction, do not translate it into a single vertical repeat number on guesswork.
- Rolls too short to yield even one adjusted drop. The calculator rejects the entry in that case. Choose a longer roll or split the wall into separately estimated sections that match the available roll length.
- Mixed rooms with different wall heights or products. Estimate each combination separately; the calculator does not silently average them.
Invalid, zero, negative, or non-finite dimensions are rejected, and the calculator stops if the selected roll is too short to provide even one adjusted drop.
