Match the Waste Percentage to Your Layout

A straight plank floor with planks running parallel to one wall produces small offcuts at each end of every row; a brick-bond layout behaves similarly because the joints are staggered but the cuts are still short. Diagonal, herringbone, and parquet layouts all cut planks at an angle, which produces more waste at every row, and large-format or heavily patterned tiles waste more too because the pattern has to match across tiles. The standard approach is to sketch the floor plan, divide it into the smallest number of rectangles that cover the whole area without overlap, measure each rectangle's length and width separately, and multiply each pair to get its sub-area. Add all those sub-areas together to get the total floor area, and only then enter that single number — with your chosen waste percentage and the box coverage — into the calculator.
For a whole-home order covering several separate rooms, run the calculation for each room individually and then add the boxes together. The waste percentage can be the same for every room when the layout and product are consistent, or it can be raised for the rooms with diagonal cuts and lowered for the simple ones. Either way, the total box count you head to the store with is the sum of the rounded-up box counts from each room, not a fresh calculation on the grand total.
Order Whole Boxes and Keep One for Spares
Rounding up is the entire point of the calculation, not a rounding error to apologise for. The area with waste is divided by the coverage per box, and the result is always pushed up to the next whole box because you cannot buy a fraction of one and because a top-up box bought later often comes from a different dye lot and never quite matches the original floor. Buying exactly 6.6 boxes' worth would leave you short partway through the install; buying 7 keeps the job moving without a panic run back to the store.
Many installers keep one extra box beyond what the calculation gives them, held back as spares for future repairs. A leaking dishwasher, a dropped pan, or a scratch from moving furniture can all damage a plank or tile months after installation, and having a spare box of the same product in the loft makes the repair a one-visit job instead of a sourcing expedition.
