BMI for women is calculated the same way as for men: weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres (kg/m²), or 703 × weight in pounds ÷ height in inches² for imperial units. The formula carries no sex variable, so a woman who weighs 60 kg and stands 1.65 m tall receives the same BMI — about 22.0 — as a man of identical height and weight. That single number is then mapped onto the World Health Organization's standard adult weight categories: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obese. BMI for Women: The Formula in Plain English
The math behind BMI was first published in the 1830s by the Belgian mathematician and astronomer Adolphe Quetelet, which is why BMI is also known as the Quetelet index. It became popular under the "body mass index" name in the twentieth century and has stayed in widespread clinical use because it is cheap, fast, and standardised across populations. In metric units the formula is straightforward:
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
In imperial units, because pounds and inches produce a much smaller number than kilograms and metres, the constant 703 multiplies the ratio to convert lb/in² back into kg/m²:
BMI = 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)²
Both versions give a single kg/m² value. The sex of the person is not part of the equation, which is one of the reasons BMI is treated as a screening tool rather than a verdict. The World Health Organization uses these cut-offs for adults worldwide, regardless of sex, so the categories you see on any calculator apply to women and men identically.

The cut-offs are applied with boundaries at "below 18.5", "below 25", "below 30", and "30 or above", so the four ranges cover every possible BMI value without gaps or overlaps. A BMI of exactly 25.0 falls in the overweight band; 24.9 falls in the normal band. These ranges were designed for population screening, not for individual diagnosis, which is why clinicians read them as triage signals rather than verdicts, as the WHO fact sheet on obesity and overweight emphasises.
Some national bodies, including several Asian health authorities, use slightly lower cut-offs (for example, 23 for overweight and 27 for obese) for the same population-level screening. Why the Standard BMI Has Limits for Women
BMI is calculated from only weight and height, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. A female athlete with significant lean mass can easily register as "overweight" while carrying very little body fat, while a sedentary woman of the same BMI can carry substantially more fat. The single number therefore says more about weight-for-height than about health.
Fat distribution matters as well. Women tend to store more fat around the hips and thighs, while men typically carry more around the abdomen. Abdominal, or visceral, fat is more strongly linked to cardiovascular and metabolic risk than fat stored around the lower body, which is why waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are often read alongside BMI for a fuller picture.
Age, ethnicity, and life stage also shift what a BMI number means. A BMI of 23 in a 25-year-old, a 65-year-old, and a recently postmenopausal woman do not imply the same body composition or the same risk profile. Pregnancy changes the picture entirely, because healthy weight gain alters the weight-for-height ratio substantially, which is why BMI is not used as a screening tool during pregnancy. Ethnic differences in body composition at a given BMI are documented in the public-health literature, and some groups discuss modified cut-offs for that reason.
None of this makes BMI useless. It remains the cheapest and most standardised first-pass screen we have for weight status at a population level, and it gives a useful baseline to discuss with a clinician. It just should not be the last word — particularly for women whose bodies do not fit the broad middle of the population the cut-offs were designed around.
A Single-Number Worked Example
To see how the formula lands on a concrete value, take a woman who weighs 65 kg and is 1.68 m tall. The metric formula gives:
BMI = 65 ÷ (1.68 × 1.68) = 65 ÷ 2.8224 ≈ 23.0 kg/m²
That value sits inside the WHO normal-weight band (18.5 – 24.9), so the calculator labels it "Normal (healthy) weight". If the same woman prefers imperial — 143 lb at 66 in — the imperial formula lands on the same number, because 703 × 143 ÷ (66 × 66) = 100,529 ÷ 4,356 ≈ 23.1 kg/m², a one-decimal rounding artefact of the unit conversion. Both routes produce a value in the normal band.
When BMI Is More Useful — and When It Isn't
BMI is most useful as a baseline check for adults who are not pregnant, not elite athletes, and not in the middle of a major muscle-building phase. For that broad middle, it gives a defensible screening signal at almost no cost, which is exactly the role the World Health Organization assigns to it.
It is less useful for women with high muscle mass from strength training, women in the late stages of pregnancy or recent postpartum period, women recovering from eating disorders, and anyone whose weight is being read alongside other health markers. In those cases the BMI number still computes correctly, but the WHO category should be treated as a starting point for a longer conversation rather than an answer on its own.
