The 4.0 GPA Formula, Written Out
Your grade point average on the 4.0 scale is computed with one formula, and every registrar uses the same one:
GPA = Σ (grade point × credit hours) ÷ Σ (credit hours)
Read it as: for every course, multiply the grade point (4.0 for an A, 3.0 for a B, and so on) by the number of credit hours that course is worth. Add all those products together, then divide by the total number of credit hours across those courses. The Greek letter sigma (Σ) is shorthand for "sum them all up."
Two consequences follow directly from that formula:
- Credit weighting. A 4-credit course contributes four times as much to the numerator as a 1-credit course, so an A in a heavy class lifts your GPA more than an A in a light one.

These are the grade points that go into the formula above. The A+ sits at 4.0 because the standard US 4.0 scale caps the top grade at 4.0; a small minority of schools use 4.3 for an A+, and if yours does, substitute 4.3 when you enter an A+ into the calculator so the result matches your transcript.

Step 2 — add the products:
12.0 + 12.0 = 24.0
Step 3 — divide by total credit hours (3 + 4 = 7):
24.0 ÷ 7 = 3.4286…
Rounded to two decimals, the semester GPA is 3.43 on the 4.0 scale.

- Course 2: B (3.0), 1 credit
Calculation: (4.0×4 + 3.0×1) ÷ 5 = (16.0 + 3.0) ÷ 5 = 19.0 ÷ 5 = 3.80.
Transcript C (heavier B):
- Course 1: A (4.0), 1 credit
- Course 2: B (3.0), 4 credits
Calculation: (4.0×1 + 3.0×4) ÷ 5 = (4.0 + 12.0) ÷ 5 = 16.0 ÷ 5 = 3.20.
The same two letter grades produced three different GPAs purely because the credit mix shifted. Nothing about the student's effort changed — only where the credits sat. Weighted vs Unweighted: Two Meanings People Confuse
The word weighted shows up in two different ways around GPAs, and conflating them is the most common source of confusion.
Credit weighting (always on). Every GPA on this page, and every GPA on a US college transcript, is "weighted" in the sense that heavier credit-hour courses pull the average harder than lighter ones. The formula in the first section already does this. There is no unweighted version that ignores credit hours — a plain average of letter grades is not a GPA at all.
Honors or AP weighting (sometimes on). Some high schools add bonus points to reward harder classes: an A in an AP or honors course might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0, and a B in the same class might count as 4.0 instead of 3.0. The result is a GPA that can climb above 4.0 — a 4.3, 4.5, or even 5.0 scale. This is the sense in which the school-reported GPA is sometimes called a "weighted GPA."

The tool on this page uses the unweighted, credit-weighted 4.0 scale that US colleges use for admissions, transfer credit, and academic standing. It does not add any AP or honors bonus. If your school awards bonus points, you have two choices: enter the boosted point value your school assigns (for example, type 5.0 in place of an A in an AP class), or use the school's own GPA calculator for the transcript number and use this one to sanity-check the unweighted version.
A+, AP, and Honors: Edge Cases That Move the Number
A handful of situations can move your GPA in ways the standard formula does not predict.
A+ on a strict 4.0 school. On the most common US scale, A+ is the same as A — both 4.0. An A+ in a 3-credit course therefore adds 12.0 to your numerator, exactly like an A would. If your registrar lists an A+ separately and your school uses the rarer 4.3 cap, replace the 4.0 value with 4.3 in your row before reading the result; the rest of the calculation proceeds normally.
AP, IB, honors, or dual-enrollment classes. On a 4.0 college transcript, those classes do not earn bonus points — an A in AP Calculus is 4.0, the same as an A in intro art. If your high school transcript shows a GPA above 4.0, that is the school adding a difficulty bonus. Pass/Fail or audit credits. Generally, Pass/Fail courses are excluded from the GPA calculation; do not include them in the calculator unless your school explicitly counts a Pass as a C (2.0) or higher. Audited courses should be omitted entirely.
Withdrawal and incomplete grades. A W usually does not enter the GPA at all. An I (incomplete) generally does not post a grade point until it is resolved, so leave that row blank until the final grade is in.
Repeated courses. Many schools replace the original grade with the new one in the GPA calculation; others average them. Check your registrar's repeat policy before you decide which version to enter. One bad grade in a heavy class. Drop one C (2.0) into a transcript of four 3-credit A's (4.0 each) plus one 3-credit C. The math is (2.0×3 + 4.0×3 + 4.0×3 + 4.0×3 + 4.0×3) ÷ 15 = (6 + 48) ÷ 15 = 54 ÷ 15 = 3.60. A perfect transcript of five 3-credit A's would have produced a 4.00, so that single C knocked 0.40 points off the term.
One strong grade rescuing a weak semester. Add a 4-credit A (4.0) to a transcript made up of three 3-credit B's (3.0 each). With the A: (4.0×4 + 3.0×3 + 3.0×3 + 3.0×3) ÷ 13 = (16 + 27) ÷ 13 = 43 ÷ 13 = 3.31. Without the A, the GPA on the three B's alone is 3.00. The heavier A pulled the term up by 0.31.
What a planned withdrawal avoids. A 4-credit F (0.0) in an otherwise solid term does serious damage: (0.0×4 + 3.0×3 + 3.0×3 + 3.0×3) ÷ 13 = (0 + 27) ÷ 13 = 2.08. A withdrawal would have left that row out of the math entirely, keeping the term at a 3.00.

Reading Your Number in Context
A GPA on its own is just a number; context is what makes it useful. A 3.0 in a tough engineering program is not the same achievement as a 3.0 in a less demanding major, even though the digits match. Most US colleges publish a median admitted GPA per program, and your registrar can tell you the threshold for honors, dean's list, or academic probation at your school.
